Roman Coppola‘s last film — and his first film — was CQ, released in 2001. While he has been a creator on several big movies since thanks to work with his father (Tetro, Youth Without Youth) and Wes Anderson (The Darjeeling Limited, Moonrise Kingdom) I’ve been hoping to see more development from him as a director.

Coppola’s second feature is A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, featuring Charlie Sheen as the title character and supporting work from Bill Murray, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Patricia Arquette, Aubrey Plaza, and Jason Schwartzman. Like CQ, the movie takes place within a skewed world that isn’t quite our reality (as the title implies) and shows what happens when Swan’s girlfriend (Katheryn Winnick) dumps him and he starts to unravel.

The film has just been dated for February 2013, and we’ve got the first two photos from the film, along with some explanation from Coppola of just what we can expect to find in Swan’s head. Read More »

When a project starts out with A-list leads like Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson, it’s not surprising when the supporting cast turns out to be equally impressive. Paul Giamatti, Jason Schwartzman, and Ruth Wilson have just joined the cast of Saving Mr. Banks, Disney’s drama about the making of Mary Poppins.

Though the film’s still in pre-production, it already boasts some serious pedigree, and not just in terms of acting talent: The Blind Side helmer John Lee Hancock is on board to direct from a Black List script by Kelly Marcel. More details after the jump.

Wes Anderson‘s new film Moonrise Kingdom is playing now, and in a meta-twist, it is playing even in the campground of the scout troop that features in the movie. In a new promo short written and directed by Anderson, Jason Schwartzman‘s character from the film presents a screening of the movie to his young charges. His rules from the screening are strict, but those kids have gotta be kept in line, right? Read More »

‘Bored to Death’ Movie in the Works?

Strong as HBO’s current lineup is, it’s simply not possible to squeeze in that many exciting new shows without cutting out a few of the old ones. And late last year, one of the unfortunate casualties of the updated programming turned out to be the excellent Bored to Death.

While the noir-inspired comedy never really kicked ass in the ratings, it developed enough of a cult following (including yours truly) that its passing was noticed and mourned. So naturally, it’s now headed in the same direction as so many other brilliant-but-cancelled series, with talk of a potential movie down the line. More details after the jump.

There isn’t a lot of new footage from Wes Anderson‘s new film Moonrise Kingdom in the behind the scenes featurette that arrived today (there is some new stuff) but there are some really lovely shots of the director and crew at work. Various participants in the film, including co-writer Roman Coppola and actors Jason Schwartzman, Ed Norton, Bruce Willis, Bob Balaban, and Tilda Swinton, explain some of the basics of the film, giving up a few new character details as they do.

The really good stuff, from my perspective, is the sidelong view of some of the film’s sets and locations. Anderson is such a meticulous stylist that there is a lot to see in his sets, and we get to see a couple of great glimpses of stuff built for the film in this featurette. We’ve seen some of this in the 20 minutes of behind the scenes b-roll that was released not long ago. But if you were worried about seeing too much of the film before the fact in that footage, this is the spoiler-free way to get a look at the set. Check it out below. Read More »

I’m almost too excited to type the next sentence. A new Wes Anderson movie comes out next month. It’s called Moonrise Kingdom and it’s about a young boy scout who disappears with a local girl, turning the entire town on its head. Anderson’s cast is as impressive as ever, featuring Edward Norton, Tilda Swinton, Bruce Willis, Bill Murray, Frances McDormand, Jason Schwartzman and more. The trailer is magic and several sites just debuted animated character posters complete with multiple new images and quotes from the film. Link to them all after the jump. Read More »

There are about a million reasons to look foward to the arrival of warmer weather each year, but for cinephiles, one of the biggest is the summer movie season. This year’s crop looks like a nicely varied one, and two of the titles I’ve been most eager to see couldn’t be more different. Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus seems as serious and futuristic as Wes Anderson‘s Moonrise Kingdom does whimsical and retro, but they both look pretty fantastic if you ask me. Check out new images from both films after the jump.

It’s been a decade since Roman Coppola directed a feature film (CQ, released in 2001) but he is preparing his second movie as director, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III. The movie is at least partially inspired by the public meltdown of Charlie Sheen, and Sheen will play the title character. Aubrey Plaza, Jason Schwartzman and Katheryn Winnick have been cast over the past few weeks, and now Bill Murray, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Patricia Arquette are signing on, too. Read More »
