the predator cast

The original 1987 Predator is one of those movies that I can’t stop watching once I see a frame of it. If John McTiernan’s action/horror/science fiction classic is on a screen near me, I will be drawn into its gravitational pull. There’s a special power in how it builds an atmosphere of macho excess before quickly nicking the whole thing, taking deranged pleasure in watching an ensemble of tough guys get completely obliterated for by an alien for two hours.

So while the Predator itself is important in a Predator movie, its victims are even more important. So when director Shane Black (of The Nice Guys and Iron Man 3 fame) reveals the cast of the latest sequel, we should take note. Are we going to like these people enough to watch them get blown to pieces by an extraterrestrial menace that sees them as nothing more than trophies to be mounted on a spaceship wall?

the predator jacob tremblay

Shane Black‘s The Predator has been building one hell of an ensemble over the past few months, with Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown and Thomas Jane all assembling to take on that iconic alien hunter. But if you look at that cast and note that it’s missing a real heavy-hitter, a true tough guy who can take on the Predator in hand-to-hand combat à la Arnold Schwarzenegger in the 1987 original, just know that this particular gap is about to be filled.

Jacob Tremblay has joined the cast of The Predator.

Shut In trailer

If there was one thing we learned last Oscar season, it was that Jacob Tremblay is basically the cutest kid ever. He was endearing in Room and even more adorable on its press tour, winning everyone with his tiny sharp suits and gleeful Star Wars fandom. But now he’s using his wide-eyed innocent schtick for evil.

Shut In stars Tremblay as Tom, a boy traumatized by the loss of his parents. He catches the attention of Mary, a psychiatrist (Naomi Watts) who’s reeling from a car accident that killed her husband and left her teenage stepson (Stranger Things‘ Charlie Heaton) in a catatonic state. But after Tom disappears under Mary’s care, things take a turn for the creepy. Oliver Platt also stars. Watch the Shut In trailer below.  Read More »

before i wake trailer

There are a few instances where it’s okay to tell your kids to give up on their dreams. For example, if a child dreams of being a dinosaur, you should probably have a gentle conversation about realistic expectations. Before I Wake proposes another more literal take on this parental dilemma: what if your kid’s nightmares began manifesting in reality and started trying to jump scare you to death?

The Before I Wake trailer gets right down to business. There’s a creepy kid (played by Room‘s Jacob Tremblay), an even creepier dead kid, Thomas Jane and Kate Bosworth looking increasingly concerned about their predicament, and a whole bunch of gross things suddenly popping up on screen.

BB-8 Critics Choice Awards

Last night, the Critics Choice Awards were televised live for the first time ever. While the event wasn’t quite as star-studded as the Golden Globes or the Oscars, the festivities were hosted by comedian and Cloverfield star T.J. Miller with some of his trademark wackiness, everyone seemed to be having a good time, and Mad Max: Fury Road took home a bunch of awards. But one special award was handed out to Industrial Light & Magic, and a special guest from Star Wars: The Force Awakens was on hand to help out.

The adorable BB-8 helped ILM’s chief creative officer John Knoll accept the Genius Award for everyone who has helped bring some of the most unbelievable creatures, settings and sights to life on the big screen. Check out the BB-8 Critics Choice Awards appearance after the jump! Read More »
