Just as we’re enjoying the last of 2012′s cinematic offerings, the latest edition of the Black List has hit the web. The annual survey highlights the hottest unproduced screenplays of the year, as based on the votes of hundreds of executives.
The term “unproduced” is used rather vaguely here. Some of these scripts (like Ivan Reitman‘s Draft Day and Wally Pfister‘s Transcendence) already have a director or star attached, while others are still floating around in search of the right studio or producer. The subjects and honorees range greatly as well. Nazi hunters, Hillary Clinton, the NFL, and time-traveling teens are among the subjects of this year’s winners, and the screenwriters run the gamut from industry newcomers to seasoned pros.

For a few months we’ve known that Wally Pfister, the cinematographer who has shot all of Christopher Nolan‘s major work from Memento on, would be making his directorial debut with a top-secret film. We’ve known that Nolan and Emma Thomas are producing, and Pfister said not long ago that “it’s a present-day science fiction film, a fairly big concept. It’s bigger budget — not as big as “Batman,” but not independent.”
Other than those tidbits we’ve known nothing, not even a title. Now we know the film is called Transcendence, and that Johhny Depp is in talks to star.
Edit: While the original news break called the film “Transendence,” as originally spelled here, it appears that was wrong, and the title uses the standard spelling Transcendence.

Briefly: Wally Pfister, the cinematographer who has worked with Christopher Nolan on all his films since Memento (winning an Oscar for Inception and ASC Awards for Inception, The Dark Knight and Batman Begins), is about to direct his first feature.
Pfister is being backed by Alcon Entertainment on a film that new screenwriter Jack Paglen wrote. The film is currently untitled, and we don’t have any details on the story. It’s also too early for casting info, so this is a pretty brief story. We do know that Alcon wants to shoot the film this fall, so we should have more info soon. Read More »
