The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me director David Frankel has a new comedy coming out later this year that centers around an energetic subculture: bird watchers. OK, perhaps not so energetic. The Big Year stars Owen Wilson, Steve Martin and Jack Black, all of whom are competing in an annual bird-watching event. As a drama it might not be riveting stuff, but as a comedy there’s potential. VOTD: 25 Actors Before They Were Famous, in 3 Minutes

I’ve always had this fascination with seeing current rich and famous figures in their humble beginnings, and the success of tabloid columns and webpages devoted to that very topic suggest I’m not the only one. When some A-list faces are as familiar to us as those of our actual loved ones, seeing long-ago photos or videos of them is amusing in the same way that seeing pictures of your friends as little kids is amusing. “Before They Were Famous: 25 Actors in 3 Minutes” collects some especially amusing snippets of today’s biggest stars, including Angelina Jolie, Ryan Gosling, Jack Nicholson, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, in some of their earliest acting gigs. Watch the video after the jump.

A couple of bits of interesting but as-yet-unconfirmed casting news have cropped up this weekend. One concerns Naturi Naughton, star of NBC’s upcoming series The Playboy Club, who may be joining forces with Hugh Jackman in The Wolverine; the other, frequent Adam Sandler collaborator Kevin James, who could be working with director Charlie Kaufman in Frank or Francis. More details on both projects after the jump.

Here’s a pretty great bit of news that doesn’t come from Comic Con: Charlie Kaufman‘s long-gestating Frank or Francis now has a possible cast. Jack Black and Nicolas Cage are now attached to the film, and Charlie Kaufman is in talks with Steve Carell to sign on, too. Read More »

International Poster For ‘The Muppets’

It has been fun to watch Disney remind audiences about The Muppets as it prepares to release a new feature starring Jim Henson’s classic characters. There have been some creative, playful trailers and a poster that was a little bit unusual as Muppet depictions tend to go — Muppets with legs! But this new international poster is a pure and simple old-school look at the crew, with no humans allowed. You’ll probably love it.  Read More »

Internet comic book lore tells a tale that Robert Smigel, the famous comedy writer who created The Ambiguously Gay Duo, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and more, once wrote a comedy screenplay for Green Lantern with Jack Black pegged to star. The hypothetical film is right up there with J.J. Abrams’ or Tim Burton’s Superman as projects that actually were developed but never got off the ground. With the new, serious Green Lantern currently the #1 movie in America, Vanity Fair took some time to sit down with Smigel to discuss some specifics about his mythic screenplay, its ideas, the process and, ultimately, its fate. I’m hoping that the reunion of Richard Linklater and Jack Black turns out to be a very good thing. The picture above is the first still from Bernie, the director’s new film in which Jack Black plays a small-town mortician who befriends an old woman (played by Shirley MacLaine) and then… well, I’ll give you slightly more spoilerish info after the break, but all you really need to know is that Mr. Linklater has called the film his own Fargo. The film is now slated to premiere at the Los Angeles Film Festival on June 16, and I’m looking forward to the first reviews. See another image and get some additional detail on the film after the break. Read More »

Is Jack Black trying to make a serious career course correction? First he’s working with Richard Linklater and Shirley MacLaine on the strange true-life comedy Bernie, and now he is set to star in Bailout, a dramedy to be directed by Michael Winterbottom. Read More »
