Spider-Man 3

In a summer full of big blockbuster movies, adaptations, sequels and threequels, you would think that Hollywood would have made some record scratch. Not so! According to the AP, attendance is running behind last summer’s and has even fallen below that of the summer of 2005. According to Media By Numbers, 279 million tickets had been sold thus far compared with 315 million at this same point in 2002.  But this is not what was supposed to happen. Industry analysts predicted the first $4 billion summer in history,  but we’re at the midway point and it’s not looking probable. As of this past weekend, Hollywood has made $1.9 billion since the first weekend in May. And $945 million of that number comes from just three movies (Pirates 3, Spider-Man 3, and Shrek the Third).

And there are a few biggies waiting in the bull pen: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, The Bourne Ultimatum, Rush Hour 3, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, The Simpsons Movie and Hairspray. But as you might notice, most of them are medium sized majors, not on the same level with a Spider-Man 3. Potter is likely to make $300 million domestically, but the rest probably won’t come close.

May-be the problem is that none of the huge releases really connected with the audiences. Most of the films resulted with bad reviews and bad word of mouth. And the good flicks (Ratatouille, Once, Sicko) got buried in the mix.

I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry Movie Trailer

I never thought I’d be interested in seeing a comedy about Adam Sandler and Kevin James getting married, but this actually looks some-what promising. The movie trailer for I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry (Poster) is now online. Check it out on Yahoo! Movies in High Definition. If my description thus far hasn’t interested you, let me just say there is a sequence in the trailer that involves Jessica Biel in underwear and a bra. Steve Buscemi, Dan Aykroyd, and Ving Rhames also co-star.

The movie hits theaters on July 20th 2007, head-to-head with Hairspray, a week after Harry Potter, and two weeks following Transformers (ie expect this film to probably get lost in the Summer shuffle).

chuck and larry posterUniversal has released the first one-sheet for the Dennis Dugan directed comedy I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry. The movie stars Adam Sandler and Kevin James as two straight firefighters who pose as a gay married couple in order to qualify for their department’s domestic partner benefits. “They’re as straight as can be, but don’t tell anyone.” Jessica Biel, Steve Buscemi, Dan Aykroyd, and Ving Rhames co-star.

Dugan was once a great comedy director, having directed some of Sandler’s better films (Big Daddy, Happy Gilmore). Recently however, Dugan has turned out more than a couple bombs: The Benchwarmers, National Security, Saving Silverman, Beverly Hills Ninja, Brain Donors and Problem Child.

The screenplay has had more hands on it than Lindsay Lohan’s breasts: Academy Award winner Alexander Payne (Sideways), Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog), Barry Fanaro (Kingpin), Lew Gallo (Ocean’s Eleven) and Jim Taylor (Election). I usually say that too many cooks spoil the soup, but what if there are more than a few talented cooks?
