Had DreamWorks stuck with its original plan, Home would be opening tomorrow. But the studio pushed it back to spring, so now we’re getting Penguins of Madagascar in theaters instead and all we’re getting of Home this week is a new trailer.
Based on Adam Rex‘s 2007 children’s book The True Meaning of Smekday, Home sees planet Earth getting taken over by an overly confident alien race called the Boov. It falls to a resourceful a human girl named Tip (voiced by Rihanna) and an outcast Boov named Oh (voiced by Jim Parsons) to save the day. Steve Martin and Jennifer Lopez round out the voice cast as Boov leader Captain Smek and Tip’s mother Lucy, respectively.

Jim Parsons and Rihanna don’t seem like the likeliest of besties, but in the new Home trailer, that’s kind of the point. He plays Oh, an alien who’s been exiled from his own kind; she’s Tip, a resourceful girl down here on Earth.
Their paths cross when Oh’s people, the Boov, try to conquer her planet. Tip is one of the few humans who’ve resisted capture, and she and Oh team up to save the day. Steve Martin also stars, as the self-important leader of the Boov. Watch the Home trailer after the jump.

Steve Martin voices the main character in Home, a DreamWorks Animation film opening this Thanksgiving. He’s Captain Smek, the leader of a race of aliens called the Boov who are searching for a new planet to call… you know. With a film like this, the studio surely hopes they’re sitting on a new animated franchise. But since Home isn’t based on a well-known property, how does one build buzz? How about releasing a Home short film that serves as a prequel to the movie?
Below, check out exactly that. A four minute short film called Almost Home which tells the amusing backstory to the Boov’s perilous journey. Read More »
Briefly: Guillermo del Toro isn’t the only director putting together a haunted house, although this competing effort probably won’t be on the scale of del Toro’s Crimson Peak. Topher Grace is going to star, with Patricia Clarkson, in a haunted house film called Home. Jason Blum, Leonardo DiCaprio and Graham King are producing, which is quite the powerhouse team.
Dennis Iliadis is set to direct from a script by Adam Alleca. All we know about the story at this point is that Grace’s character will be “a man who suspects the mansion he inherited from his parents is haunted.” A pretty classic haunted house concept, in other words, at least at its core.
