Ed Skrein in The Transporter Refueled

In a possibly unprecedented win against whitewashing, Ed Skrein has stepped down from playing Major Ben Daimio in the Neil Marshall-helmed reboot of Hellboy.

The Japanese-American character had become a source of controversy when Skrein, a white British actor, was cast in the role last week. Criticisms of whitewashing mounted against the casting until finally Skrein announced on Monday that he has decided to leave the project.

Update 2: Deadpool villain Ed Skrein has joined the cast of Hellboy as one of the central characters. We’ve included the new details below.

Update: American Honey star Sasha Lane has been cast as one of Hellboy‘s central characters.

The Bureau For Paranormal Research and Defense will fight the creatures that go bump in the night once again in Neil Marshall‘s Hellboy reboot, now simply called Hellboy. Some new details have emerged about the comic book adaptation, including who’s a part of B.P.R.D. this time around. Abe Sapien is on the team, of course, but so is someone who can listen to the dead and a scarred military-type with a dark secret.

Yesterday, we learned that Lionsgate’s new Hellboy reboot film has dropped the Rise of the Blood Queen subtitle and will officially be known as just Hellboy. And perhaps that title better reflects director Neil Marshall‘s approach to the film, which comic creator Mike Mignola describes as being more in line with the original source material.

In a new interview, Mignola talks about his own (surprisingly limited) involvement with the upcoming movie, clarifies the film’s central character, and confirms the appearance of one of the comics’ most recognizable teams.
