R-rated jokes can be a good tool for a comedy filmmaker to have in their arsenal. There are some gags that simply don’t work when they’re toned down to satisfy the MPAA. But that doesn’t mean ruder, cruder, and lewder necessarily translates to funnier. A limp comedy is still a limp comedy, no matter how many bare butts, dick jokes, and blood splatters you toss in there.
Case in point: Last month’s green-band trailer for Hell Baby was pretty hit-or-miss, to put it generously, and I’m not sure that ratio’s much improved in this new red-band trailer. More boobs are on display, though, so there’s that. Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant direct, and Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Riki Lindhome, and Keegan-Michael Key star. A hopeful, pregnant couple moving into a decrepit old house: that never turns out well in the movies. In Hell Baby, though, filmmakers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant try to have a little fun on the way to the inevitable doom that follows such a bad life choice.
Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb star as the married pair, who are expecting twins. They purchase a suspiciously cheap mansion in New Orleans, only to discover that it’s — surprise, surprise — haunted. The Vatican dispatches its crack exorcism team (played by Garant and Lennon) to help. Hilarity ostensibly ensues. Watch the first trailer after the jump.

Just under two months away from the kickoff of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival and the second batch of films has been announced. Wednesday’s reveal of the competition narrative and documentaries has now been followed by the Spotlight, New Frontier and Park City at Midnight movies, which is where you’ll find most of the weird and genre stuff that’s playing at the fest from January 17-27.
Among the highlights are, the world premiere of the anthology film S-VHS (the sequel to V/H/S); Jeff Nichols‘ follow-up to Take Shelter, Mud; Ben Wheatley‘s follow-up to Kill List, Sightseers; James Franco interpreting gay S&M footage cut from Crusing in Interior. Leather Bar; Sarah Polley‘s documentary Stories We Tell; and the exorcism comedy Hell Baby starring Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Paul Scheer, Rob Huebel.

Rob Corddry and Leslie Bibb may seem like an unlikely couple, but they’ll be united in the fight against a demonic child in Hell Baby. Scripted and directed by Night at the Museum writers Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant, the comedy centers around a pregnant woman and her husband (Bibb and Corddry) who move into a dilapidated haunted house in New Orleans. In an effort to keep from having a demonic baby, they call upon the Vatican’s crack exorcism team, played by Lennon and Garant. Bet that’ll go well. Production will begin in New Orleans next month. After the jump, Clark Duke becomes Adam Scott’s kid brother, and Paul Rudd and Paul Giamatti pull Amy Landecker into their Christmas tree scheme.
