Harald Zwart Tapped To Direct ‘Bakugan’

In Hollywood, it’s never about what you’ve done, it’s about what you’ve done lately. Before this summer, Harald Zwart directed One Night at McCool’s, Agent Cody Banks and The Pink Panther 2. Not exactly box office or critical bonanzas. Still, he found himself in China directing the remake of The Karate Kid for Sony. From a $40 million budget, that film made almost $400 million worldwide and now Universal is entrusting Zwart with one of their precious possible franchises. We’ve seen two trailers so far for the remake of The Karate Kid, both of which focused pretty heavily on the film’s story. In the runup to the release of the film this week there’s a third trailer, and this one is almost exclusively action, including a street chase scene that is vaguely reminiscent of Ong Bak, though the full thing probably doesn’t have that movie’s over-the-top stunts. Sony Readies a Rollercoaster Tycoon Adaptation

Ever played the “Tycoon” series of video games? Games such as “Railroad Tycoon,” “Transport Tycoon,” and “Rollercoaster Tycoon” were like “SimCity” on a smaller level, allowing you to manage one company and compete for world domination in its business. The “Rollercoaster Tycoon” series was particularly popular, spawning two sequels, several expansion packs, a board game, and a book series.

Now aspiring Rollercoaster creators can look forward to one more spin-off: Sony Pictures Animation has picked up the rights for a film adaptation of “Rollercoaster Tycoon” with director Harald Zwart (director of Sony’s upcoming Karate Kid) executive producing and possibly directing.

The Associated Press has confirmed that the Will Smith-produced remake/re-imagining of The Karate Kid has officially been retitled The Kung-Fu Kid.  The new title should qualm upset fans of the original, and actually makes a whole load more of sense considering the story is based around Kung Fu and not Karate.
