Zach Gilford, best known as sensitive QB Matt Saracen on Friday Night Lights, will be starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand. Described as “a combination of Die Hard and High Noon,” the action film revolves around a border town sheriff (Schwarzenegger) who finds himself tasked with stopping a drug kingpin from crossing the U.S. border. Gilford will play one of the cops working under Schwarzenegger’s character.
The Last Stand marks the English-language debut of South Korean filmmaker Kim Ji-woon (I Saw the Devil), as well as Schwarzenegger’s return to acting. Given the kind of work that Schwarzenegger and Gilford have each done in the past, I’m having a little trouble imagining them starring next to each other. But Gilford’s a wonderful actor who deserves to get way more work than he does, so I’m just happy to see him pick up a higher-profile gig for once. The Last Stand is due out January 18, 2013. After the jump, pop star Pink tries her hand at acting, while actor Derek Luke gives music a shot.

One of the weirder American monster legends is that which concerns the Jersey Devil, which originates in the 18th century, but became one of the breakout American pop-culture monsters thanks to reported sightings in the early 1900s.
Now Stephen Moyer from True Blood will star in a new film exploiting the legend: The Barrens. He’ll play a family man who, while on a camping trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrents, “becomes convinced [he and his family are] being stalked by the legendary winged monster that looks like a deformed hybrid of several different animals.” Darren Lynn Bousman wrote and will direct; the film shoots later this month in Toronto (what, not in Jersey? boo!) and will be released next fall by Anchor Bay. After the break, The Book of Mormon star Josh Gad joins Thanks For Sharing — a movie about sex addiction — and Rupert Grint and David Tennant will voice characters in the CG Postman Pat movie. Read More »
“Dont talk to anyone. Don’t touch anyone.” If you watched the trailer for Steven Soderbergh‘s viral thriller Contagion and didn’t walk away with a feeling that we’re all doomed to die alone in abject horror, then these six character posters might be enough to hammer that idea home. These images feature the six core cast members (Matt Damon, Marion Cotillard, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne and Gwyneth Paltrow) in various stages of agitation, tension or distress. Not the most appealing way to look at each one, but the shots definitely get the point across. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Well, that didn’t take long. Earlier today we showed you the first footage from Steven Soderbergh‘s viral outbreak thriller Contagion, which opens on September 9. Now the full trailer is online, and it seems designed to scare the living shit out of anyone who has even the vaguest touch of germ paranoia. See it after the break. (And, yes, that image above, which is official, does say the film is opening in IMAX. That may have been data that was floating around, but it is news to me. Great news.) Read More »
Damned Entertainment Tonight strikes again. Studios love to give the show teaser clips of upcoming films for the tanned talking head hosts to gab over. In this case the footage is from a film that is exactly the sort of action-packed mainstream tentpole that ET thrives on. Oh, wait, actually, it is Steven Soderbergh‘s upcoming global pandemic thriller Contagion, aka one of our more anticipated films of the fall.
Wouldn’t footage of this best be seen without the blaring voiceover? Yes, but I think at this point studio publicists just release footage to ET to laugh at us complaining about it. So: this is a not an official trailer release, or even a good capture of the ET teaser segment. It is a brief video that nonetheless offers the first look at Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, and Laurence Fishburne. Wait for the trailer if you like, or hit the jump for the early look. Read More »
We’ve got a handful of release dates to share, with the biggest possibly being Guillermo del Toro‘s upcoming Pacific Rim, which, if things go well, will begin shooting late this summer or in early fall. Warner Bros. will distribute the Legendary Pictures production, and has just set July 12, 2013 as the release date. Pacific Rim is scripted by Travis Beacham and already boasts Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba and Charlie Day in the cast. The story is “set in a future where giant malevolent creatures threaten to destroy the earth, and the planet must band together and use advanced weapons technology to eradicate the growing threat.” [THR]
After the break, a new date for Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, and dates for the Stephenie Meyer adaptation The Host, as well as for Roman Polanski’s Carnage, Pedro Almodovar’s The Skin I Live In, and Tucker & Dale Vs Evil. Read More »
We’ve already seen photos of Andrew Garfield as both Peter Parker and Spider-Man and Emma Stone as love interest Gwen Stacy in
Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man. Today we have the first looks at Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors a.k.a. The Lizard, and Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben.
The first photo, snapped by college student J. Anthony Hall, shows Ifans and Garfield filming an outdoor scene. Not much is actually happening in the still, but it’s worth noting that Ifans is clearly wearing a bright green sock or covering over his right hand — presumably so it can be made to look missing or changed in post-production. (In the comics, Connors was a war surgeon who lost his arm in a blast. Upon returning to civilian life, he developed a serum from reptilian DNA and regenerated his arm. Then he became a full-on reptilian monster. Oops.)
The other images, from the Daily Mail, feature Sheen and Garfield standing outside in sunglasses. I’d guess that they aren’t in character in these pictures, but I can’t be sure. Scroll past the jump to see the full images. [Coming Soon via Obsessed with Film]
Also after the jump: possible bad news for Wonder Woman fans, possible good news for Pepper Potts fans, and an image from The Avengers set, and details on The Avengers‘ budget and locations.
