captain phasma in star wars the last jedi

You’ll be forgiven for not remembering that Captain Phasma was left to a questionable fate at the end of Star Wars: The Force Awakens — it turns out Star Wars: the Last Jedi director Rian Johnson didn’t remember, either.

The stoic villain who terrorized her former insubordinate Finn (John Boyega), was left at the bottom of a trash compactor at the end of The Force Awakens, shortly before the super weapon  that housed that trash chute exploded. Phasma obviously escaped death, but a thoughtless line of dialogue from Johnson almost buried Gwendoline Christie‘s character back in the dumpster.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi Training Featurette

We’ve got less than two weeks until Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters. While we’re sure more footage from the movie is coming in various TV spots and other marketing before the film arrives later this month, the marketing department at Lucasfilm figured out another way to keep the hype going strong for the movie without really spoiling anything.

A brand new Star Wars: The Last Jedi training featurette has been released online, and it focuses on the actors from the sequel preparing for their action sequences. Of particular interest are the sequences involving Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver training for battle. We see the two sides of the light and dark wielding their weapons behind the scenes and on set, preparing for what will likely be another intense battle between good and evil. Read More »

Captain Phasma's backstory

It’s clear to everyone who watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens that Captain Phasma – the chrome-armored First Order officer played by Game of ThronesGwendoline Christie – got the shaft in that movie. And I mean that metaphorically as well as literally: not only was she barely in the film, but the last we saw of the character, she was being unceremoniously dumped into a garbage chute.

We’ll find out how she escaped that unfortunate situation in an upcoming Marvel comic series, but let’s take a quick look at how she came to be such a fierce warrior fighting for the First Order to begin with. A Star Wars novel fills in much of Captain Phasma’s backstory, and a new excerpt has provided us with some insight into Phasma’s origins.

In addition to a new crew of instantly lovable heroes, Star Wars: The Force Awakens introduced one of the best and most complex villains in the history of the saga: Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren. It also introduced Gwendoline Christie‘s Captain Phasma, who looked really, really cool, but didn’t do much of anything in the actual plot.

As you’d expect, Star Wars: The Last Jedi will continue the journey of both characters and some newly revealed details offer a tease of what we can expect.
