2012 looks like it could be a year with a particularly strong crop of movies, and the b-picture isn’t getting left out of the action. This week alone we’ve got The Grey and Man on a Ledge (with the former being a lot more satisfying than the latter) and there are more coming in later months.
One of the more appealing ones is Lockout, aka Lock-Out, aka MS One: Maximum Security, aka a space-set blend of Escape From New York and Taken, starring Guy Pearce and Maggie Grace. (I also see shades of the Jack recruitment mission from Mass Effect 2.) The trailers we’ve seen for the film (here and here) make it look like a great time, and now there is a new one that much more actively sets up the plot, in which Guy Pearce has to rescue the daughter of the US President from a locked-down prison satellite. Another month, another Nicolas Cage thriller. This time around, the film is Roger Donaldson‘s Seeking Justice (formerly titled The Hungry Rabbit Jumps and then just Justice), and Cage plays a man so filled with rage over a recent attack on his wife (January Jones) that he takes a stranger (Guy Pearce) up on his offer to “take care of” the attacker. Cage’s character is then shocked, just shocked, to find out that vigilante justice isn’t exactly sweet and simple. Watch the trailer after the jump.

A year ago, we thought we’d see John Hillcoat‘s The Wettest County by the end of 2011. By the end of last year, we had a new release date: April 20. Now it seems we’ll have to wait even longer, as The Weinstein Co. has pushed the opening back again, this time to August 31. It’s disappointing news, not only because we’re eager to see the film but also because it’s a date that suggests the studio isn’t giving it much of a chance. Labor Day weekend is generally one of the slowest of any given year, and it’s usually a bad sign for a movie when the studio dumps it into that slot.
Based on “mostly true” events, Hillcoat’s historical drama centers around a group of brothers (Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, and Jason Clarke) who get into the bootlegging business in Prohibition-era Virginia. Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska, Guy Pearce, and Gary Oldman also star. More after the jump.

We’ve seen the poster, the set photos, the hi-res stills, and no fewer than three separate trailers for the trailer — and now, at long last, the first trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus has arrived. Starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Idris Elba, the sci-fi horror film serves as a kind of prequel to 1979′s Alien, though the filmmakers and cast have been careful to emphasize that it works as a standalone film as well.
And indeed, while fans of the series will undoubtedly be thrilled to see the nods to previous installments, there’s enough good stuff here to interest even those who haven’t thought about the franchise in fifteen years. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Fox is pushing this a little far at this point, but with the release of the third tease for the trailer for Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus, we at least get many glimpses of behind the scenes footage. The two teases we’ve seen so far got us ready for the trailer release, which is scheduled for tomorrow, but we’ll take the third, just because things are slowing down as we approach Christmas.

Well, this is a trailer for a trailer, but it still has some of the first footage most of you will see from Ridley Scott‘s Prometheus. This is some of the same video that was shown in Hall H at Comic Con this summer, with Ridley Scott sitting on a set that looks like it came right out of Alien. (And he is still trying to say that this movie is only barely connected to Alien!) There isn’t much here, but I imagine it will be more than enough to get you excited about what we’ll see when Prometheus really makes its grand debut when the trailer drops this Thursday. Luc Besson’s EuropaCorp turns an eye to space for the film Lockout (or Lock-Out depending on where you live), in which Guy Pearce has to rescue Maggie Grace from a prison that has been taken over by the inmates. Yep, there’s a reason this movie has been referred to as ‘Taken in space’ ever since it was in the first stages of production.
But with the international trailer for the movie, Lockout does start to establish some character of its own. The core of the trailer is a conversation between Pearce and Peter Stormare in which Pearce gets slapped around more than a little bit. The effects seen in the trailer look determinately mid-budget, but if Pearce can channel some of the same kick-ass spirit that possessed Liam Neeson in Taken, the effects might not matter much at all. Just over a week ago we saw the first real batch of photos from Ridley Scott‘s Alien prequel, Prometheus. I’m anxiously awaiting the first real trailer for the film, having seen the Comic Con footage and a glimpse of the bad trailer bootleg that also surfaced last week. (It’s not worth watching, so don’t bother to seek out the bootleg if you haven’t already seen it — seriously, just wait for the real thing.) I don’t know if this film is going to be any good, but I think it is going to be a joy to look at, if nothing else.
To tide us over until the trailer hits, here are the same images that were released not long ago, but in very nice high-res quality. Now you can check out all the little details. From these few images the ‘Alien DNA’ that Ridley Scott mentioned when announcing the movie is so very apparent. And, as I’m sure others have remarked, doesn’t that giant head look more than a bit like original Alien conceptual artist and effects designer H.R. Giger? Alien DNA, indeed.
