You can always count on the Cannes Film Festival to showcase the most intriguing releases from around the world. This year, that includes Coming Home, the latest from director Zhang Yimou.

Gong Li to Star in Tarsem Singh’s Marco Polo Project

After making a name for himself with lush, visually oriented fantasies like The Fall and March’s Mirror, Mirror, Tarsem Singh could be getting a little more grounded with his newest project. The filmmaker is preparing to direct a historical drama about the explorer Marco Polo. While the iconic figure has yet to be cast, the English-language film has found its first star in the form of Chinese actress Gong Li. More details after the jump.

Movie Trailer: Shanghai

Shanghai

You’d think an epic WWII espionage thriller set in Shanghai, starring John Cusack and directed by Mikael1408Håfström would be an easy sell. But maybe not, if it’s really just a trip to dullsville. Shanghai was pushed around on the Weinstein Company schedule for a while last year before being pushed off indefinitely. We’ve seen stills for the film, but now there’s an international trailer. If this clips is anything to judge the film by, no wonder TWC didn’t want to spend money to advertise and release it. Read More »

It’s been quite a while since Walter Hill directed a film that could be called a total success, but I never stop pulling for the guy who directed The Warriors, 48 Hrs. and Streets of Fire. (Even if he also directed Another 48 Hrs. — nasty stuff.) So I’ll take any shred of positive news about his upcoming work, and this news is seriously positive. Hill is working on a film called St. Vincent that will reunite him with his Johnny Handsome star Mickey Rourke. Now he’s added another Johnny Handsome alum, Forest Whitaker, and some other great cast members that should push the film up  on my watch list. Read More »

Hannibal Rising Movie Review

Hannibal Rising

When I first saw the advertisements for Hannibal Rising, I feared the worst. The marketing people have decided to sell the movie as a teen slasher film. While the movie certainly doesn’t measure up to The Silence of the Lambs (or even it’s subsequent sequels), I’m happy to report that Hannibal Rising is watch-able (although I’m not sure I’d recommend it).
