The Best Movie Animal Performances of 2014

Best Animal Performances of 2014

I was watching Gone Girl for the fourth time and admiring how David Fincher (and his cinematographer Jeff Cronenweth) majestically shot Ben Affleck‘s character Nick Dunne’s cat and I began to wonder about the cat’s true role in the story. The cat is featured too prominently to be just a background prop. What did the cat mean?

As I thought about this I began to realize that there had been a lot of big screen kitties this year. The New York Times notes in their review that “cats are the new dogs,” and judging from the list of animals in this article, they might be right. But as I started to think about it more, it wasn’t just cats but dogs and some actually amazing performances by other animals in this past year of film. So the list of best animal performances of 2014 grew and grew. After the jump you will find my examination of why 2014 was the year of animal movie performances and what it all means. Read More »

GONE GIRL sequel

Whether you’re talking about the book or movie, Gone Girl has an deliciously infuriating ending. Author/screenwriter Gillian Flynn crafted a story about people you hate who are doomed to be attached to each other forever. There’s no happy ending here. No bow on top. And that’s part of what makes both versions of the story so great.

But this is the Internet era and no one is every satisfied. So Flynn was recently asked if we could ever expect a sequel to Gone Girl, and she didn’t say “No.” Read the Gone Girl sequel quotes. Read More »

At this point in the awards race each year, support has already crystallized around some of the frontrunners. This year, that group includes Boyhood, Birdman, The Theory of Everything, and The Imitation Game, and the Producers Guild followed the rest of their industry in nominating those titles for this year’s PGA Awards.

It’s more interesting, however, to see which dark horses did and didn’t make the cut. American Sniper and Nightcrawler emerged as two of the more surprising inclusions, while Unbroken and Selma got left out in the cold.

Meanwhile on the TV side, the PGA is all about Fargo, True Detective, and Orange Is the New Black, while shows like Parks & Recreation and Homeland went overlooked. Hit the jump for the full list of the 2015 Producers Guild nominations.  Read More »

Gone Girl Effects Reel

David Fincher is a filmmaker who knows how to seamlessly incorporate computer generated effects into his films. For example, I highly recommend watching the behind the scenes documentary on the Blu-ray/DVD of Zodiac. When it was first released, the amount of digital effects in that movie was eye opening to me. And he’s only continued to do that.

Artemple Hollywood has released a short video revealing the invisible CG effects in Fincher’s latest movie Gone Girl. The Gone Girl effects reel showcases seamlessly integrated composite shots which remove green screen, creating a world that didn’t exist in the background, or augmenting what was there. Watch the Gone Girl effects reel embedded after the jump.

Angie’s Top 10 Films of 2014

Boyhood

In box office terms, 2014 wasn’t a huge year for film. But in creative terms, it’s hard to fault this year’s crop. It contained at least one once-in-a-lifetime masterpiece, not to mention one of the greatest horror movies in years, several big-budget franchise-builders that soared way past expectations, and some completely out-of-nowhere gems.

As the year winds to a close, I’ve taken a moment to look back at some highlights. As usual, this shouldn’t be considered an objective list of the year’s best film, but an entirely subjective list of favorites. Run down my top 10 films of 2014 with me after the jump.
