Scott Frank interview

Godless, the acclaimed new miniseries now streaming on Netflix, first came into being years ago when writer, director, and creator, Scott Frank wrote a feature script pitting Roy Goode (Jack O’Connell) and the town of La Belle against the wrath of Frank Griffin (Jeff Daniels). Despite all the talent that became involved, the western struggled to get made as a film. After years of trying and directing two exceptional films, Frank brought the project to Netflix, where he was finally able to tell his original story on a grand scale.

Even the magnitude of Griffin’s towering presence helps make Godless bigger in scope. Some of the characters are as epic as the landscapes – Frank doesn’t really mind if Netflix customers experience them on an iPhone. He recently told us about the series’ journey to Netflix, the exeprience of shooting a mammoth of a western, and much more.

Godless trailer

When filmmaker Steven Soderbergh (Ocean’s Eleven, Logan Lucky) gets involved in a project, I pay attention. When that project happens to be a western, a genre I’ve always loved…well, I’m hooked already.

Such is the case with Godless, a Netflix limited series Soderbergh is producing for writer/director Scott Frank (The Lookout). The streaming service has just unveiled a full-length trailer for the new show, and since it follows a group of women running a New Mexico town and taking a stand against a group of male outlaws, it seems like exactly the kind of story we need right now. Take a look for yourselves and see what I mean below.

godless trailer

Neo-Westerns and Western remakes abound, but you’d be hard pressed to find a good old-fashioned original Western right now. Steven Soderbergh, who after a brief flirtation with his old feature film haunts with Logan Lucky, has returned to the television world to offer you just that.

Soderbergh is producing Godless, a new limited series on Netflix created by Scott Frank (co-writer of this year’s genre-bending superhero hit Logan). The streaming service has just dropped a teaser trailer for the series, and it’s just as dusty and grim as you’d expect from a straight Western, with Jeff Daniels, Michelle Dockery, and Jack O’Connell leading the star-studded cast.

godless first look

An old school western miniseries is coming to Netflix later this year from Steven Soderbergh and director Scott Frank (The Lookout). The last time the two of them worked together was on their adaptation of Elmore Leonard’s Out of Sight, so of course their next collaboration has our expectations sky high. Frank, who last directed A Walk Among the Tombstones, wrote and directed all of the miniseries, which stars Jack O’Connell (Unbroken), Jeff Daniels (The Newsroom), Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey), and Scoot McNairy (Halt & Catch Fire). Sounds pretty good, right?

Below, check out the Godless first look.

Scott Frank interview

Back in the early 1990s, filmmaker Scott Frank began writing his debut novel “Shaker,” which is now available in paperback. It’s the story of an unassuming hitman, an embarrassing mayor, a sharp cop with a checkered past, a young street gang, and an unrelenting earthquake. They all affect each other in a Los Angeles-set story, unmistakably from the director of The Lookout and A Walk Among the Tombstones and the writer behind two beloved Elmore Leonard film adaptations, Get Shorty and Out of Sight.

Shaker‘s characters are on a comically dark, dramatic, and violent journey that concludes at a famous location that calls to mind some other great thrillers from the ’90s. In addition to discussing Logan, which Frank co-wrote, he also told us about the experience of completing Shaker years after he first imagined the story’s tragic, seemingly childlike hitman, Roy Cooper.

godless series

Remember when Steven Soderbergh retired for about a minute or so? Well, the director of Magic Mike, Traffic, and Ocean’s 11 has been busier than ever since he said he was done making movies, but his attention has turned to the small screen and the television medium has welcomed him with open arms. If you haven’t watched his Cinemax series The Knick, you have homework – watching one of our most versatile filmmakers play with longform storytelling without a major movie studio breathing down neck has been a huge treat. The Knick isn’t just great TV, it’s great Soderbergh. Full-stop.

But Soderbergh has been spreading the love to anyone who wants it. He executive produced the Amazon series Red Oaks and has a hand in the upcoming Starz series based on his 2009 film The Girlfriend Experience. Now, he’s going where all interesting filmmakers ultimately end up: Netflix. And he’s making a western.
