chris o'dowd in Get Shorty TV series

Earlier this summer, EPIX started working on a Get Shorty television show, reportedly based on both Elmore Leonard‘s novel and Barry Sonnenfeld‘s excellent adaptation. Unlike the source material and the 1995 film, Ernest “Chili” Palmer isn’t the protagonist of this story. EPIX’s adaptation centers around Miles Daly, a former member of the Nevada crime syndicate who will be played by Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd).

Get Shorty TV Series

Epix made its first ever presentation to the Television Critics Association on Saturday with its first original series Graves, Berlin Station and America Divided. During his opening remarks, Epix President and CEO Mark S. Greenberg announced a director for the pilot of their series based on Elmore Leonard’s Get Shorty. Television veteran Allen Coulter (The Sopranos, Sex and the City, House of Cards) will direct the pilot.

After the sessions, I asked executive vice president of original programming Jocelyn Diaz more about Get Shorty, and she discussed how the series will tell a new story with new main characters, making it much different from the film adaptation and more like FX’s acclaimed series Fargo. Find out what she had to say about the Get Shorty TV Series after the jump. Read More »

Get Shorty is the newest addition to the long list of films turning into television programs. Director Barry Sonnenfeld‘s excellent 1995 film is an adaptation of Elmore Leonard‘s novel, but the show will draw from both the movie and Leonard’s original work. EPIX has teamed up with MGM for Get Shorty, which will begin shooting later this year.
