If a film studio can’t bring in audiences to a slick-looking, 3D animated film starring animals with famous voices, they might as well hand over their keys. Making kids movies is like printing money; even the bad ones are usually successful in some way. That makes it tough to gauge just how big a role the marketing played in it.
For example, on April 15 Blue Sky is releasing Rio directed by Carlos Saldanha, who has done Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: Meltdown, and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs for the CG animation house. It features characters voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Mann, Jemaine Clement, George Lopez, Jake T. Austin, Will.I.Am and is about a rare bird (Eisenberg) who finds out there’s one other bird in the world like him, and she’s female (Hathaway), so he travels to Rio de Janeiro to win her heart.
While the main characters are important, side characters regularly make these movies and that’s what these new character posters focus on. The question remains, will posters like this make much of a difference? Check them out and let us know. Read More »

Lets be honest — As the holidays approach, news tends to get thinner. We have never written about Beverly Hills Chihuaha 2 on /Film, and I never planned to cover the movie on the site. But on a morning like this, there isn’t much else. So after the jump you you can watch a four and a half minute sneak preview video for the upcoming Direct-to-DVD sequel.

In May, 20th Century Fox released the first teaser trailer for Blue Sky Studios’ computer animated film Rio. The teaser showed promise, introducing us to a few cute little bird creatures, but it gave us little idea about the larger journey of the film. Now Fox has released a new movie trailer for the film, which shows us a lot more about the film’s plot.
Directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: Meltdown, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), and starring Anne Hathaway, Neil Patrick Harris, Rodrigo Santoro, George Lopez and Jake T. Austin, the story follows “a nerdy macaw who leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio de Janeiro. He embarks on the adventure of a lifetime, learning to open himself up to all that life has to offer along the way.”

I love the design of the birds (the human character not so much), and you can definitely tell this trailer was edited to appeal to the 3D audiences seeing Shrek Forever After. Blue Sku Studios has always been good at creating cute little creatures, but they have suffered finding good stories. The most interesting character in the Ice Age sequels was the cute squirrel Scrat, who would always relegated to the sidelines. That said, I really liked Horton Hears a Who.

Benicio Del Toro has signed to play g-man Jack Garcia in Making Jack Falcone. Garcia targeted the Gambino family, and was responsible for taking down dozens of made men. Garcia is Cuban-born, but managed to play an Italian so successfully that he was invited to become a made man himself. Steven Soderbergh is producing the film, with a script by Che screenwriter Peter Buchman based on Garcia’s memoir about the Gambino operation.
Garcia also worked a lot of other undercover jobs for the FBI — a surprising thing given that he hardly blends into a crowd. At 6’4″ and 390 pounds, he’s exactly the opposite of the image typically held of a guy who can worm into many different organizations. But Garcia is charming, too — take a look at the 60 Minutes interview clip embedded after the break to see what he’s like. [Deadline Hollywood]
After the break, four voices for Smurfs and a love interest for Conan. Read More »

Consider this a courtesy report on the fact that New Line is making a film based on the Warner Bros. cartoon character Speedy Gonzales, with George Lopez providing the voice of the character. Because, like the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, the Garfield films, et al, this one is a movie purely for the kids. As an adult who always thought the character was the worst of WB’s stable, this sounds awful.
Speaking of Garfield, the writers behind that first movie (Alex Sokolow and Joel Cohen) are writing Speedy, which will be a live-action/CGI hybrid. Anne Lopez, wife of George, says “We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy. [He's] going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.” My guess: he doesn’t become Mexico’s cultural ambassador to the UN. [THR]
After the break, Anjelica Huston and Philip Baker Hall help make the cast for Rogen and McAvoy’s upcoming ‘cancer comedy’ look more like one for a Paul Thomas Anderson movie. Could there be any more ridiculous story pairing? OK, sure there could, but it probably won’t happen today. Read More »
