Though the small screen retains an unfair reputation as a lesser medium — think of all the snobby types who’ll brag about not owning a television, but would never be so dismissive about books or movies — the truth is that the medium varies as much as any other. Today’s TV Bits runs the gamut from highbrow (a literary adaptation on HBO) to lowbrow (a modeling industry reality show on The CW), with plenty of stuff in between. After the jump:

Last week, we reported on an as-yet-untitled documentary about South Park that would be airing on Comedy Central October 2, days ahead of the show’s October 5 return. We now have a bit more detail on what, exactly, the special will be about. According to Playbill (via Collider), the documentary will be:
an all-access pass to the behind-the-scenes world of creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone at South Park Studios in Los Angeles through this special documentary, providing an exclusive, insiders look into the making of a ‘South Park’ episode.
The documentary is apparently part of a year-long celebration of the series to mark its 15th anniversary. Other components of the celebration include the “South Park Fan Experience” at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, a traveling exhibit curated by artist Ron English, and limited-edition South Park-branded merchandise.

We’ve got a mixed bag of TV bits for you today, from some pretty sci-fi artwork for TNT to possible envelope-pushing on NBC, so let’s get started.
First off, HBO’s treatment of In Treatment: It was widely reported last night that the premium cable network had canceled its ratings-challenged psychiatric drama starring Gabriel Byrne. Today, however, HBO has released a statement suggesting the show might not be dead after all:
It’s true that we have no plans to continue with ‘In Treatment’ as previously formatted. However, we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.
The show currently has a somewhat unusual format. Instead of one episode per week, In Treatment airs multiple episodes in a week. It seems plausible that HBO’s plan is to streamline the show somewhat by consolidating or cutting some of the episodes, but the network has yet to officially announce its strategy. (Edit from Russ: HBO also planned to continue Deadwood in a different format, and that never happened. That, however, was a far more expensive proposition. Hopefully this will work out better.) News on a screen adaptation of Brian Michael Bendis‘ comic book series Powers has been painfully slow going: It’s been eleven years since the series launched to critical acclaim, ten years since Sony optioned it for a film, two years since the project was redirected to the small screen, and one year since Bendis and Journeyman creator Kevin Falls pitched the show to cable network FX.
Now, finally, FX has greenlit a pilot for the series. Hopefully, this means we can look forward to development on this project picking up pace. More details after the jump.

FX is quickly developing a shining reputation for their original programming. With shows like The Shield, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Louie, Rescue Me, Justified, Sons of Anarchy and more (including the canceled Terriers) they’ve almost reached a status where if a new show ends up on their network, it’s a must watch.
On January 11, the next series on their every expanding roster premieres and it’s called Lights Out. Executive produced by Warren Leight (Law and Order: Criminal Intent) and starring Holt McCallany (Fight Club), Lights Out centers on an aging, struggling, former heavyweight boxing champion who must decide between returning to the ring or turning to a life of crime.
