Ex Machina

Before Oscar Isaac and Domhnall Gleeson go gallivanting about some galaxy far, far away, they’ll be tangling with robots right here on planet Earth. Alex Garland‘s Ex Machina has Gleeson playing Caleb, a programmer selected to help his company’s CEO Nathan (Isaac) test his new artificial intelligence experiment Ava (Alicia Vikander).

At first all seems well, with Ava impressing both men. But as in every AI movie ever made, things don’t quite turn out the way the guys expected. Watch the new Ex Machina trailer after the jump.

Angie’s Most Anticipated Films of 2015

Avengers Age of Ultron Science Bros

Even as I scramble to get in a few more 2014 releases before I close the book on this year, I’m looking forward to 2015. Next year promises to be huge for Hollywood, packed as it is with big-name sequels like Star Wars 7 and Avengers 2. But it also looks like a good time for movie lovers, not just movie studios. A lot of those tentpoles look genuinely good. And a lot of riskier ventures look like they’ll pay off. And that’s not even getting into all of the indie gems buried ahead, waiting for us to discover them at Sundance or Toronto or what have you.

Films from the last category were naturally left off my list, as I can’t get excited for a movie I haven’t heard of yet or know nothing about. But for a list of the films (big and small) that I do know about, and am eagerly looking forward to, join me after the jump.  Read More »

Ex Machina image

As a writer, Alex Garland has been behind some of our favorite sci-fi films of the past several years including Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, and Dredd. But it’s only now, with Ex Machina, that he’s trying to make one as a director.

He’s already got a great cast assembled for the project, including Domhnall Gleeson, Oscar Isaac, and Alicia Vikander. Now a trippy new image of Vikander as a half-formed android has arrived to give us a better idea of what exactly Garland has in mind. Get an eyeful at new Ex Machina images after the jump.
