Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is currently in limbo, thanks to Disney CEO Bob Iger. Iger did a conference call on Tuesday and made it rain with news. He mentioned The Incredibles 2, Star Wars Episode VII, and also mentioned that, despite directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg  being attached, the studio has yet to green light the long-in-development fifth film in the mega-blockbuster franchise starring Johnny Depp.  Read More »

Odin Santa Claus

Gritty superhero origin stories are a dime a dozen these days, but the latest pop culture icon to get the treatment wasn’t crafted by Marvel or DC. It’s Santa Claus, that most enduring and endearing of childhood figures.

Sony has made a seven-figure deal for Winter’s Knight, a “reimagining” of Saint Nick’s backstory that folds in elements of Viking mythology. Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg, the duo behind Kon-Tiki and the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 5, are on board to direct. Learn more about the new project after the jump.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Though 2010′s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was a billion dollar global blockbuster, critics hated it. It sits at a rotten 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. Might the producers think “if the movie was adored, maybe we could have made more”? That possibility was certainly part of Tuesday’s news that Pirates of the Caribbean 5, originally scheduled for a July 2015 release date, has been delayed. Disney executives said the film “isn’t there yet” scriptwise, and the delay will allow producer Jerry Bruckerheimer, screenwriter Jeff Nathanson, and directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg to fine tune the script into a film that is critically and financially successful.

That much we know. What we don’t know is what the film is about and what the specific issues are. One site has gotten their hands one the first plot details for the film, rumored to be called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, and they illuminate both that title as well as some potential issues. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Just as Disney moves one film into the crowded summer of 2015, another has been taken out. Pirates of the Caribbean 5, originally scheduled for release July 15, 2015, has been delayed. The move comes a day after Marvel’s Ant-Man moved into the same month.

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg have been tapped to direct the film, which is rumored to be called Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. No new release date has been set, but the summer of 2016 seems likely. Read More »

Pirates of the Caribbean

Briefly: Jerry Bruckheimer and Johnny Depp are prepping the fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie, with Kon Tiki directors Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg taking the helm. Jeff Nathanson is scripting, and while we don’t know any story details at this point, now we’ve got a title. The series will finally get around to using a classic pirate phrase, as the film is reportedly titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales.

The info comes via This Is Infamous, which got the title in an interview with the directors. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will shoot in early 2014, and is set for release on July 15, 2015. There has been talk that Disney will limit Bruckheimer’s autonomy on this chapter, but it remains to be seen how that will affect the film, if indeed it will at all.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

The directors of the Oscar-nominated Kon-Tiki are directing the next Pirates of the Caribbean film. Norwegian directing team Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg will soon sign to helm Pirates of the Caribbean 5, starring Johnny Depp, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer and written by Jeff Nathanson.

They were at the top of a short-list that went around a few weeks ago and will quickly move ahead hoping to start filming later this year or very early next year aimed at a July 10, 2015 release. Read More »

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

With Johnny Depp‘s schedule quickly filling up and a Summer 2015 release date already locked in, Disney is feeling the pressure to hire a director for Pirates of the Caribbean 5. Rob Marshall, who directed the last film, was rumored to return but he’s already working on Into The Woods. That leaves the door open for someone new.

Deadline reports Disney will make a decision very soon and have narrowed it down to three choices, all of which are very pretty unconventional. They are Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman), the team of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki) and Rupert Sanders (Snow White And the Huntsman). Read More »
