Let’s start off this casting break with a quick one: Robert Luketic (The Ugly Truth) is putting together a diamond heist movie called Brilliant, written by Blood Diamond producer Gillian Gorfil. He’s now got Eric Bana set to star. The plot follows “a small-time criminal who joins accomplished thieves in a diamond heist,” with Bana presumably playing the small-timer. I can’t say that Luketic is the most inspiring choice — I don’t expect a serious heist movie here — but Bana could be a good choice for the lead. [Variety]

After the break, Liongate wants more of what Tyler Perry’s got, and Jason Bateman goes back to the land of the indie for two films. Read More »

The current issue of Entertainment Weekly (you know, the one with Jennifer Lawrence on the cover and on the inside) doesn’t only have the first look at The Hunger Games, it also has the first look at 21 Jump Street starring Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and Blackbird with Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde and Charlie Hunnan. One’s a comedy, the other’s a thriller and you can see the photos and read quotes from the stars after the jump. Read More »

Last time we heard about the film Blackbird, it was called Kin. That was when Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde were cast as “two desperate sibling fugitives (Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde) on the run who subsequently collide with the holiday homecoming of a troubled ex-boxer (Charlie Hunnam).” The film’s name has changed, but that cast remains the same.

Now Kate Mara and Treat Williams have taken roles, playing a father and daughter who factor into the story. Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristofferson are also on board as the parents of Charlie Hunnam’s boxer. That’s a pretty cool parent pairing; in general this is shaping up with quite the strong cast. Stefan Ruzowitzky is directing from a script by Zach Dean, and the film shoots in March in Montreal. [Variety]

After the break, a shortlist for actresses that could end up in The Trade, the film about Yankee baseball players and wife-swapping that is being written by Ben and Casey Affleck. Read More »

One of the soon-to-be-released films that’s currently flying under the radar is Hanna, directed by Joe Wright and starring Saoirse Ronan, Eric Bana and Cate Blanchett. Focusing on a young girl trained as an assassin by her father, we’ve already seen a domestic and international trailer and now we’ve got two clips adding up to three minutes of footage and a slew of slick new images including an upgraded poster. Word around the campfire is that Wright has a winner with Hanna, a blend of Hit Girl in Kick Ass with the emotion of Leon: The Professional complete with cool music by The Chemical Brothers and a compelling story wrapped around it all. Form your own opinion by checking out the material after the jump. Hanna will be released April 8. Read More »

‘Hanna’ International Trailer

Hanna

Focus Features has released a new international movie trailer for Joe Wright‘s Hanna, which stars Academy Award nominee Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones) as a 16-year-old killing machine in. Saoirse plays the title character in Hanna, who has been “raised from childhood to be the perfect assassin by her ex-CIA man father (Eric Bana) in rural Finland.” Wright is probably best known for his period dramas Atonement and Pride & Prejudice. Hanna is a different type of film: an action/adventure/thriller. The film also stars Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett (Robin Hood), Eric Bana (Star Trek), and Niels Arestrup (Un Prophète).

The film looks completely different from Wright’s recent filmography, movies like Atonement and Pride & Prejudice. Watch the trailer now embedded after the jump. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.
