Sorry Kirsten Dunst, you’re the latest to be replaced in Sony/Columbia’s Spider-Man series. With Marc Webb confirmed to return as director for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the studio is moving forward with casting for the film, and there are a couple big reveals today.
One is that Electro is rumored as “one of the villains” under consideration for the sequel. The other is that Mary Jane Watson, played by Dunst in Sam Raimi’s films, is definitely going to appear. And Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) is the likely choice to play her. Read More »

Do you want to see a couple generations of today’s stars — Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Halle Berry, Emma Stone, and many more — spouting dirty jokes? Then Movie 43, masterminded by Peter “One Half of the Farrelly Brothers” Farrelly, probably has something for you. The red-band trailer has turned into an essential component in marketing the R-rated comedy, and when the comedy is promised as a collection of particularly dirty, foul-mouthed sketches, nothing but the red-band will do.
So here’s a first look at Movie 43, which features over 20 comedy sketches from nearly a dozen directors, and a cavalcade of stars. Some of the stuff is so in line with people’s previous work that it doesn’t even seem transgressive; I think one of the Scary Movies pooped on me, so seeing Anna Faris ask for the same thing is just turnabout/fair play. But seeing Halle Berry in wild mode might be great, and it’s always fun to see Kate Winslet go blue. (Check out Romance & Cigarettes if you’ve never seen it — not a great movie, but lord, does Winslet let go there.)

Next year, you’ll be able to see Nicolas Cage playing a caveman. And by “see” I mean “hear.” He’s the star of The Croods, a brand new 3D animated film from DreamWorks Animation. The film, directed by Chris Sanders and Kirk DeMicco, is about a prehistoric family traversing a wild environment looking for a new cave to call home. In addition to Cage, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Catherine Keener, Clark Duke, and Cloris Leachman all lend their voices. The scheduled release date is March 22, 2013.

Good news for Cameron Crowe fans as mere months after his last film, the next one is gaining traction. Sony has just bought the rights to a new romantic comedy by the writer director with Emma Stone attached to star. Though not mentioned in the initial report, additional outlets are reporting the film is Deep Tiki, a tropical romance Crowe was fiddling with in 2008 with Ben Stiller and Reese Witherspoon attached at the time. Whether or not that’s this film or not has yet to be confirmed but Crowe will write and direct while Stone will play opposite a male, who has yet to be cast. It has only been ten years since Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man swung into theaters, and Sony and Columbia have already gone in for the remake. Today Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man opens with Andrew Garfield in the title role, and Emma Stone and Rhys Ifansas the primary additional cast. The film takes the time to tell Spidey’s origin — yes, again — and spends as much time on the character interaction between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy (Stone) as it does the superhero action. Perhaps even more, actually.
The reviews of the film have been flowing in for a week, with a pretty consistent take on the movie that praises the actors and has varying degrees of distaste for much of the rest of the picture. In truth, the biggest problem with Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man isn’t even really its own fault. But the fact that this reboot comes just five short years after the end of Sam Raimi‘s previous Spider-Man trilogy looms over the whole endeavor, making it difficult not to compare the two.
It’s a damn shame. Because while Webb’s film isn’t as seamlessly put together as Raimi’s first two were, it has its own funny little rough-hewn charms. Had there been more space between the earlier Spider-Man movies and this new reboot, it might’ve felt lively and fresh. As it is, The Amazing Spider-Man is good, but not quite good enough to justify retelling the story again so soon.

Marc Webb‘s The Amazing Spider-Man screened last week for junket press, but attendees were largely forbidden to review the film at the time, or even discuss it in detail on social media. But the film premiered this week in London, and with that open screening taking place reviews are starting to proliferate.
So what do people have to say about this Spidey reboot, which stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, and Rhys Ifans? The film changes some elements of Spider-Man’s origin, and in the view of some emphasizes the emotional/teen romance angle more than in Sam Raimi’s films. (Which means that some people didn’t watch Raimi’s films too closely, because the emotional angle was huge in all three.)
The consistent takeaway is that Garfield and Stone are quite good together, and that the supporting cast gives them an able boost. But the rest of it? Well, it’s a summer movie… Read More »
