The Lego Movie

In the wrong hands, The Lego Movie could’ve been a lazy, forgettable kids’ film with no obvious purpose other than pushing more plastic bricks. But as directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller, it’s looking like a very early contender for the year’s best animated film — funny, smart, energetic, and far more original than we have any reason to expect a film based on a toy would be.

With every new bit of marketing that rolls out, it’s looking more and more promising. Today, we have nine new clips from the film totaling about eight minutes of footage. Chris Pratt leads the voice cast as Emmet, an extraordinarily ordinary minifig who is accidentally drafted to lead a revolution against the evil President Business (Will Ferrell). Banks Higgins Pitch Perfect

In a year’s time, when I’m looking at the films of 2015 and crafting my most anticipated lost, a lot of pretty obvious ones will be on there. One that’s a little less obvious is Pitch Perfect 2. The 2012 original was a deep breath of fresh air, with its pop culture specificity, nearly gross out humor, and aca-awesome acapella singing. It grossed $113 million worldwide against a $17 million budget and Universal is expecting a sequel in 2015.

One of the film’s stars is also its producer, and that’s Elizabeth Banks. The versatile actress will soon appear in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and when I talked with her about her expanded role in that film, I simply had to ask her about the latest with the 2015 sequel. She didn’t offer up much, but when there’s so little information out there at all, something is better than nothing. Read More »

And to prepare for that new promo, the marketing team has revealed five brief new teasers based on some of the film’s central characters: good guy Emmet (Chris Pratt), kickass Wyldstyle (Elizabeth Banks), villainous President Business (Will Ferrell), pirate-y Metalbeard (Nick Offerman), and competitive Batman (Will Ferrell).
