It’s not so unexpected for a hit movie to get a sequel a year or two out, but it’s also becoming increasingly common for franchises to pick up with the characters again ten or even twenty years after the last installment. In this edition of Sequel Bits, we have a handful of possible upcoming projects that look back to the ’80s and ’90s for inspiration. After the jump:
- Tim Burton considers getting involved with Beetlejuice 2
- Steven Spielberg won’t be directing Jurassic Park 4
- Edward Burns could revisit his debut The Brothers McMullan, twenty years later
- Peter Facinelli discusses the possibility (or lack thereof) of a Can’t Hardly Wait 2

Edward Burns may be best known for his work in front of the camera, but over the past decade and half he’s made a dozen or so attempts at writing and directing as well. His latest project, the indie drama Newlyweds, stars Burns as a New Yorker quietly going about his life when he finds his life disrupted by the sudden arrival of his troubled little sister (Kerry Bishé). Sort of like Steve McQueen’s Shame or Sean Durkin’s Martha Marcy May Marlene, I guess, except not really at all.
Rounding out the cast are Caitlin Fitzgerald as Burns’ wife Katie, Marsha Dietlein as Katie’s sister Marsha, and Max Baker as Marsha’s husband. Watch the trailer after the jump.

And the first photo from Man on a Ledge, which just began shooting with Sam Worthington starring as the titular character, shows…Sam Worthington on a ledge. How appropriate. Ed Harris has joined the cast, too, which makes this talent lineup a bit more interesting. More info on Asger Leth‘s in-progress film after the break. Read More »

The last time we checked in on Martin Freeman his name was being bandied about as a likely candidate for Bilbo Baggins in The Hobbit. Given that the fate of that film is still up in the air, I’m not much sirprised to see that Mr. Freeman is booking other work. He’s now set to co-star in Animals, from director Marcal Fores. The film will have the actor playing a schoolteacher in “a fantasy-laced coming-of-age tale that [producer] Sergi Casamitjana dubs as ‘Donnie Darko’ meets Gus Van Sant.’”
Not that this role will have any impact at all on the possibility of Martin Freeman being in The Hobbit; Animals will shoot for eight weeks beginning on Monday, and Mr. Freeman will only work for about a week of that schedule. A couple of interesting craftsmen are involved behind the scenes, too: Buried cinematographer Eduard Grau is shooting, and Pan’s Labyrinth editor Bernat Vilaplana will cut the film. [Variety]
After the break, Ed Burns tries to talk Sam Worthington down from a ledge, and a Mad Men fave books a new role. Read More »

Did you know Edward Burns has a new movie coming out? Nice Guy Johnny premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, but has managed to fly under the radar since then. The film is hitting VOD, DVD and iTunes in October, but until then there’s an official trailer, which is after the break. Read More »

You probably think that the only reason why we’d be posting the 27 Dresses trailer is because of Katherine Heigl. And you would be right in your assumptions. It’s a romantic comedy about marriage, so what more can I say? They are promoting it as “From the screenwriter of The Devil Wears Prada and starring “Knonked Up‘s Katherine Heigl”. It’s so funny how studios decide to market movies now-a-days. I’m not saying they are wrong, it’s just very amusing. Check out the trailer after the jump.
