Movie Trailer: Todd Phillips’ Due Date

Due Date

Warner Bros has released the first movie trailer for Hangover director Todd Phillips‘ next comedy Due Date. The film stars Zach Galifianakis and Robert Downey Jr in a buddy-comedy story which has been described as kinda Hangover meets Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The screenplay by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland (with rewrites by Adam Sztykiel) has Galifianakis as a wannabe actor who becomes the companion to an expectant father / businessman (Downey) as they dash cross-country to (hopefully) arrive in time for the childbirth.

Robert Downey Jr has gone on record saying he thinks this might be “the second greatest movie” he’s ever made. Is it? Hit the jump to watch the trailer now. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below. The pairing of Downey Jr and Galifianakis seems to have worked brilliantly. Downey is the perfect straight man to Galifianakis’ comic relief/foil.

In a new interview with The Onion in which he discusses everything from Dawn of the Dead to sperm cells, the RZA let it be known that a biopic on Ol’ Dirty Bastard, the late id of the Wu-Tang Clan, is in early discussion stages. The highlight of Funny People also updated on his hands-on role on The Last Dragon remake and his directorial debut, the kung-fu flick The Man With the Iron Fist, under the tutelage of his pal Eli Roth. Supremely good stuff…

Two pretty tasty bits of casting today. First up, it’s that big reunion of the cast from The Soloist we’ve all been waiting for! Jamie Foxx has joined the cast of Due Date, the next movie from Todd Phillips. That’ll put him back in the frame with Robert Downey Jr., and this time in a matchup that people might actually want to see. Because the Oscar-baity Soloist is well and good, but seeing the two bounce off each other in a comedy sounds a lot more appealing. Though we may not see too much of Foxx and Downey together, as he plays “Downey’s longtime pal, who once dated his wife (Michelle Monaghan) and secretly keeps in touch with her.” Ruh-roh. Due Date has RDJ as a high-strung guy trying to get home in time for the birth of his child, which pushes him to hitch a ride with a slacker (Zach Galifianakis). Hijinks ensue. [THR]

When Due Date, the next film from Todd Phillips, was announced, I wasn’t all that interested in seeing the director do another road trip comedy. Then Zach Galifianakis signed on, followed soon by Robert Downey, Jr. Now Michelle Monaghan has taken the film’s female lead role. A Kiss Kiss Bang Bang reunion? Can you say “hell, yeah”? Now we know what Zach Galifianakis and Todd Phillips are going to do to celebrate The Hangover making several boatloads of cash: they’ll do two more movies together. Variety reports that both have signed on to make Due Date for Warner Bros., and then they’ll do The Hangover 2 next year. (Actually, the trade doesn’t specifically say that anyone but Phillips and his co-writer Scot Armstrong are currently set for H2, but the returning trio is a very safe bet.) Due Date is one of the three possible projects we reported on a couple of days ago, and one that has kind of a Hangover plus Planes, Trains and Automobiles implication as we learn more about the plot.
