As James Franco prepares to debut his latest directorial effort, Child of God, at Venice and Toronto, another of his movies is on its way to a Telluride premiere. Palo Alto wasn’t helmed by Franco, but it was based on his short story collection and stars Franco in a key role.
Instead, it’s Gia Coppola (granddaughter of Francis Ford and niece of Sofia and Roman) who directed this drama, which follows several interconnected plotlines in the suburban town of its title. Emma Roberts leads the cast as a teenager who gets romantically involved with her soccer coach (Franco), while Jack Kilmer (son of Val) and Nat Wolff play a pair of troubled kids. The on-set snap features, obviously, Mr. Coppola, and also Elle Fanning in costume and makeup seemingly inspired by Delirium from Sandman. See a slightly larger version below. Read More »

I was elated less at the title and more at the fact that (a) the legendary director keeps on keepin’ on and (b) he’s got Val Kilmer as a lead and (c) Twixt is a sort of genre picture.
Now, thanks to a statement from the director, we know that the film relies upon some “gothic romance/horror subject matter” and that it has additional names in the cast: Ben Chaplin, David Paymer and Tetro‘s Alden Ehrenreich, among others. Read More »
