Today may be Halloween but I’m already looking ahead to Christmas. The family gatherings, the joy of giving, the religious celebration… it’s all important. But this year, there’s also Tarantino. Quentin Tarantino‘s latest film, Django Unchained, opens on December 25 and brings with it the kind of excitement generated by a filmmaker whose previous releases have been almost universally stellar. Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown, Kill Bill, Inglourious Basterds and now the story of a slave (Jamie Foxx) trained by a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) to kill some evil brothers (including Leonardo DiCaprio) to save the slave’s wife (Kerry Washington).
Tarantino recently revealed, like is the case with many of his films, Django is going to have ties to his previous movie and that makes this new batch of images even more interesting. Besides new shots of several of the stars, we meet secondary characters played by Don Johnson and Walton Goggins. Most of the Tarantino movie connections are tangential so it’s possible these guys are more important than they seem. And if they’re not, it’s still a new look at the latest Tarantino film. And there you have it, folks. For the past several months we’ve watched as Quentin Tarantino filled seemingly every single role in his Django Unchained except the key character of Django’s wife Broomhilda — but the part remains empty no more. Kerry Washington has landed the female lead in the “Southern-fried spaghetti Western,” in which she’ll star opposite Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, and many others. The latest actor to flirt with Quentin Tarantino and his new anti-slavery ‘Southern,’ Django Unchained, is Joseph Gordon-Levitt. The actor reportedly wants to do the film, and is ready to take a role pending the resolution of some scheduling issues. One of those scheduling issues would have been press commitments for Premium Rush, but that movie was just pushed back to August, so that’s one hurdle gone. Aaron Eckhart has landed the lead role in Randy Miller‘s The Drummer, a biopic of Beach Boys drummer Dennis Wilson. The indie picture follows the last six years of Wilson’s life, leading up to his death in 1983 at the age of 39. In addition to starring, Eckhart will also serve as executive producer and record his own versions of Wilson’s 1977 solo album Pacific Ocean Blue.
The Drummer is one of several intriguing projects Eckhart has booked for next year, including the comic book adaptation I, Frankenstein, the J.M. Barrie-based Pan, and Neil LaBute’s The Geography of Hope. He recently completed the CIA thriller The Expatriate, and will next appear opposite Johnny Depp in next week’s The Rum Diary. Shooting on The Drummer is scheduled to begin in late spring or early summer 2012. [Variety]

Briefly: It’s a shame that Kevin Costner won’t be in Quentin Tarantino‘s Django Unchained because of his commitment to The Hatfields and the McCoys, but Tarantino has lined up another well-known guy to take a role. Don Johnson will be in the movie, though he won’t play the slave trainer role for which Costner was lined up. Instead, he’ll play a totally different, but still nasty character. Read More »

Whenever something like Paul Blart: Mall Cop grosses $31 million in its opening weekend despite the disapproval of critics, a slew of articles and blog posts come out wondering whether movie writers are out of touch with the general public. But this weekend, at least, the average filmgoer and the average critic seemed united in their near-universal disdain for both the porn “comedy” Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star and the indie horror Creature.
Bucky Larson earned an impressive 0% on Rotten Tomatoes and averaged just over eight moviegoers per showing. Meanwhile, Creature, which received just 2 positive reviews out of the 18 counted on Rotten Tomatoes, managed to achieve the worst-ever opening for a film showing on more than 1,500 screens. A couple months back, we got a sneak preview of Robert Rodriguez’s Machete thanks to an a special “illegal” movie trailer released online for Cinco De Mayo. The real movie trailer is attached to the Rober Rodriguez-produced Predators, which hits theaters this weekend. But you don’t have to head to your local multiplex to see the new trailer, as it is now online and embedded after the jump.
I actually prefer the original Grindhouse faux trailer to the real full length trailer. Which ius strange since the real trailer features a bunch of big stars and a much bigger budget (estimated at $20 million). I think it might be that I just prefer the retro scratch-filled version. That said, the movie still looks like a bad-ass b-movie with an interesting cast.Watch the trailer now below.
