Luc Besson‘s The Family (once called Malativa) seems like a fun amalgamation of well-known film ideas, as Robert de Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer play the two heads of a former mob family that has gone into witness protection in France. Despite the helpful guidance of Tommy Lee Jones, things don’t go so well, thanks to a comically toxic combination of elements: the family’s inability to change, and the attentions of a clean-up crew that wants to silence them.

The trailer is below, and you’ll see some Coppola, Demme, and Scorsese in this footage. (It even opens with a Rolling Stones song — maybe the best Stones song, actually — but Scorsese did serve as a consultant and exec producer who worked on the edit.) Sad as I am to see summer go, there is something I’m really looking forward to about the coming months, and that is the advent of the television’s regular season. With Henry Cavill announced for Superman, naturally people are turning to speculation about other big roles in the film. Teaser Trailer: ‘I Am Number Four’

We’ve covered I Am Number Four quite a bit, in part because it was originally rumored as a directorial gig for Michael Bay. Then DJ Caruso (Disturbia, Eagle Eye) signed on, as did Sharlto Copley from District 9. Copely had to drop out and was replaced by Timothy Olyphant, and Alex Pettyfer took the title role.

Movie Trailer: The Romantics

Paramount Famous Productions has released the first movie trailer for The Romantics. Director and screenwriter Galt Niederhoffer has adapted her own novel, The Romantics, a “zeitgeist love story and generational comedy, takes place over the course of one night at a deluxe seaside wedding.” The cast includes Katie Holmes, Josh Duhamel, Anna Paquin, Adam Brody, Malin Ackerman, Elijah Wood, Candice Bergen, Jeremy Strong, and Dianna Agron. Niederhoffer received the 2007 Sundance Audience Award for producing Grace is Gone. She also produced the Sundance Film Festival films Lonesome Jim, Dedication, Diminished Capacity, Birds of America, and Hurricane.

Comic Con: I Am Number Four Viral Video

While I was sitting around waiting to get into the panel for The Goon on Friday, I noticed a little card with a printed QR barcode on one side and a shape that looked vaguely like the UbiSoft logo on the other. Then I remembered that I’d installed a barcode scanner on my phone, and found that scanning the code pointed me to a URL containing a little behind the scenes fluff video for DJ Caruso‘s I Am Number Four, which is currently in production. The film adaptation of I Am Number Four, the first book in a sci-fi novel series co-authored by James Frey, became a big deal pretty fast. First it was because the film was rumored to be set up as a project for Michael Bay to produce and, possibly, direct.

Then DJ Caruso (Eagle Eye, Disturbia) was tapped to direct, with Bay and Steven Spielberg producing. Actors have steadily been added to the film, and now we’ve got one more: Dianna Agron, who has had insane exposure in the last year thanks to her role on Glee. Read More »
