Green Hornet Moves To July, Jennifer’s Body Gets Rated Bloody R
Posted on Thursday, July 2nd, 2009 by Peter Sciretta

Columbia Pictures has moved Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet back two weeks from June 25th 2010 to July 9th 2010. According to ERC, the move was made to make room for the studio’s Dennis Dugan-directed comedy Grown Ups, which was moved from March 12th to June 25th. But with The Twilight Saga’s Eclipse scheduled to hit theaters on June 30th, I’m surprised that Columbia would want either of their films near the tween vampire romance sequel.
And since it was revealed that Megan Fox wouldn’t appear naked in the filmed topless scene in the Diablo Cody-scripted horror film Jennifer’s Body, fans have been speculating that 20th Century Fox was aiming for a PG-13 rating. I read the initial draft of the screenplay, and I’m not sure that story could be told in PG-13. But fear not, the MPAA has finally spoken. The film is officially rated R for “sexuality, bloody violence, language and brief drug use.” Nope, you’re still not going to see Megan Fox topless, but at least we’ll be getting a bloody r-rated horror film. [Bloody-disgusting]

FilmSchoolRejects has posted some new photos from the Diablo Cody-scripted teen horror film Jennifer’s Body. The photos were were apparently scanned from Empire Magazine. After the jump I’ve included the new images which feature Megan Fox as a cheerleader and a man eating blood covered possessed demon, along with a dirty and bloody Amanda Seyfried. Head on over to FSR for the high res scans.

Christina Aguilera has signed on to make her live-action big screen debut in Steven Antin’s contemporary musical Burlesque for Screen Gems. Antin wrote the script, which was later revised by Erin Brockovich scribe Susannah Grant. No mention is made of Diablo Cody’s screenplay involvement in the Variety story, which makes me wonder if any of her contributions have made it to the final draft. Aguilera will play “an ambitious small-town girl with a big voice” who tries to escape a hollow past by performing in a neo-burlesque club in Los Angeles. The film hopes to be Moulin Rouge meets Cabaret, with established songs that will be updated and worked into dance numbers.
Antin has described neo-burlesque as “a contemporary take on the traditional burlesque that derived from vaudeville, with singing, dancing, comedy and more tease than striptease.” Antin’s sister Robin created the burlesque troupe The Pussycat Dolls in 1995. Burlesque is aiming to begin production in January 2010.
LOL: Diablo Cody on Keeping References in Movies Current
Posted on Wednesday, April 8th, 2009 by Peter Sciretta

Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody on Twitter:
- Am finding myself bothered by stale MySpace reference in “Jennifer’s Body.” I love MySpace and all but, you know.
- I wonder if we can dub in “Twitter” instead. Do it on a reverse shot so it doesn’t look totally Bruce Lee.
- I don’t know how the references in a feature script can ever stay current when the average film takes four years to develop.
- I guess Apatow turns ‘em around extra fast. The rest of us have to deal with Sanjaya jokes in our 2009 releases.
Diablo Cody Penning a New Spin on The Taming of the Shrew
Posted on Thursday, January 15th, 2009 by Brendon Connelly
How long have I been here at /Film, remind me? About 25 hours I think, and already I’m onto my second Diablo Cody story. Dangerous stuff for a man once told by his wife that he “isn’t allowed” to get a crush on the Juno scribe.
This one comes from a mildly confusing Variety report on Mr. Steven Spielberg digging deep in his own pockets and paying from his personal funds to keep the rights of 17 in-development films under the Dreamworks umbrella. These films include The Trial of the Chicago 7, Atlantis Rising, The 39 Clues… but not Diablo Cody’s “new spin” on William Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew. So, what is the connection? Diablo Cody’s Acting Career To Kick Off With 90210
Posted on Wednesday, January 14th, 2009 by Brendon Connelly

The United States of Tara is Diablo Cody’s new TV show, launching this Sunday on Showtime - but if you’re imapatient, the premiere epsiode is already streaming from the series’ official site, though if you’re anything like me (in all respects but geographical location) you’ll also tune in on Sunday so that you can watch with live Twitter accompaniment from Ms. Cody herself. The show was apparently conceived by Steven Spielberg - which is what was said about What Lies Beneath, too if you remember. According to that film’s co-scriptwriter Clark Gregg in the Creative Screenwriting podcast, however, Spielberg’s contribution there amounted to “it’s about, you know, a couple they have a house and maybe it’s an old house and maybe there’s a ghost in the house and at first they think it’s the ghost of somebody from a long time ago and then maybe not” so who knows what he gave Cody to work with.
Out on the road to hype Tara, Cody has been talking about a couple of her other upcoming projects too: Jennifer’s Body and an acting turn on 90210. But what about them?

Some television show creators (or what they call show runners) have provided commentary on various episodes on DVD. Others like Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald Moore, have gone a step further and released a weekly audio commentary in podcast form (just as Kevin Smith has provided a commentary that fans were able to listen to while his film was still in theaters). But as far as I know, no one has done a live commentary of their television show. Enter Diablo Cody.
Love her or hate her, you must admit, Academy Award-winning screenwriter Diablo Cody puts herself out there and is very accessible. I guess that’s what happens when a blogger goes to Hollywood. Based on an idea by executive producer Steven Spielberg, her first television series, The United States of Tara, premieres on Showtime on January 18th 2009 (you can watch the pilot episode online right now). Cody has announced that she will be doing a live commentary of The United States of Tara on the twitter account DiabloOnTara:
“I am going to be Twittering live during episodes as they air,” says Cody. “It’ll be like Pop-Up Video only even lamer and more meta. As far as I know, I am the first show-creator ever to do live commentary, and I don’t expect Chuck Lorre or David E. Kelly to be jumping on this train anytime soon. So I may be the first and only.”
As of the moment I’m writing this, I’m one of only 4 followers of the DiabloonTara twitter account. I’m sure that will quickly change. As always, you can always follow my tweets on twitter.com/slashfilm.

If Hollywood Directors Made Campaign Ads: Part 2
The Pitch: Last week in VOTD, we featured a video titled If Hollywood Directors Made Campaign Ads, which shows what political campaign attack ads would look like if they were directed by the likes of John Woo, Kevin Smith, and Wes Anderson. The Landline and Chris Mann have gone back and recorded another batch, this time featuring the faux talents of Diablo Cody/Jason Reitman, David Lynch and M. Night Shyamalan.

The first preview for the Diablo Cody-scripted Steven Spielberg-produced Showtime series, United States of Tara. Toni Collette stars as Tara Gregor, a wife and mother of two teens, who just happens to suffer from multiple personality disorder. Basically the family must find a way to deal and live with her multiple personalities.
I might have read the script. And if I did, I’d tell you how it’s peppered with Cody’s pop-culture obsessed snap-filled dialog, minus the intense slang of Juno. And it’s not light either. In the opening it is revealed that Tara has just found morning after pills in her 16-year-old daughter’s Kate’s bag. It’s later revealed that (potential spoiler warning) one of Tara’s alter egos, a burnout teenage stoner named T, was the one who supplied her with said pills. If Collette can actually pull off each of the personalities, and actually make it believable, this could be Showtime’s next Dexter.
United States of Tara premieres on January 18th 2009.
Fringe Gets Full Season; Spielberg/Cody’s Tara Debuts January 18th
Posted on Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 by Peter Sciretta
Fox has given the new JJ Abrams show Fringe a full order of 22-episodes, which is no surprise considering the ratings. This is the first new series on the big four networks to get a full season commitment. I haven’t had a chance to watch the show since getting back from my 28 day trip, but the pilot episode was just a little bt underwelming. I plan on sticking with it to mid-season, and see if the story really picks up steam.

The new Steven Speilberg-produced Diablo Cody-scripted Showtime series United States of Tara will premiere at 10pm on January 18th 2009. The series will follow the final season premiere of the L Word, and lead into the second season of Secret Diary of a Call Girl. The series stars Toni Collette as a mother with multiple personality disorder. The comedy comes with how the different family members and friends deal with her different personalities. I’ve read the script for the pilot episode, which was strong. It will all hinge on how convincing Collette is as the various different personalities.
