Empire Strikes Back live read

Jason Reitman‘s live-read series has been a hot ticket at LACMA for a few years. The director chooses a new cast to read a well-known, sometimes classic script live on stage as a one-time performance. (We’ve covered many of these events in the past.) This year, among other films, Reitman has chosen one script with a particular appeal: The Empire Strikes Back. Most of the scripts chosen for live reads are oriented very much around character and dialogue; the event is just a bunch of people sitting on stage, after all. But the Empire Strikes Back live read will be one of the few to feature a script that is effects-heavy — meaning the audience will have to imagine a lot of what’s going on as the actors read the pages.

But the cast of characters is still tremendous, and some of the actors have now been revealed. They include Aaron Paul as Luke Skywalker, and J.K. Simmons as Darth Vader. Read More »

Dear White People teaser

Dear White People made a splash at Sundance as a well-liked, funny satire about race relations in modern America. The first Dear White People teaser trailer has just arrived, and you’ll see pretty quickly why Sundance audiences liked the movie. Very few men could step into the very big shoes left by late actor Michael Clarke Duncan, who passed away earlier this year. In 2005, the actor best know for his work in The Green Mile and Armageddon played a bad-ass bodyguard in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller‘s film Sin City, which is currently shooting a sequel, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. Duncan’s role, Manute, plays a part in the film and unfortunately, his passing has forced the director to recast. Their choice is a great one, though: the former TV President of the United States, insurance spokesman and power-hitting Indian, Dennis Haysbert. At Comic-Con, we learned that geek favorite Alan Tudyk would lend his voice to the video game-inspired animated adventure Wreck-It Ralph, but it turns out he’s not the only late-breaking addition to the cast. Walt Disney Studios sent out a press release today revealing several other stars that had just boarded the project, including Ed O’Neill, Mindy Kaling, Adam Carolla, Horatio Sanz, Dennis Haysbert, and many more.
