alien covenant prologue

If you were watching Legion this evening (and you really should be watching Legion!), you were offered a brief preview of looks like an extended clip from Alien: Covenant. The full scene has arrived online and it introduces us to the crew of the colony ship Covenant, which is venturing deep into space on a mission to establish human outposts on other planets. But it’s not actually a scene from the movie – it’s a short film called Prologue: Last Supper and it’s directed by Luke Scott, the son of director Ridley Scott.

While it probably doesn’t feature any footage from the actual movie, the short does offer something the final film probably will not: this group of people actually having a good time, with no running or screaming or eviscerations. Let’s see what we can gleam from it.

Katherine Waterston in Alien: Covenant

Yesterday, we got our first look at the complete cast of Shane Black’s The Predator, so it makes perfect sense that today offers up our first look at the complete cast of Ridley Scott‘s Alien: Covenant. After all, these are the definitive science fiction/horror movie series, with the beasties at the center of both franchises even battling it out in the two Alien vs. Predator movies. It’s fun to imagine that rivalry extending beyond the screen – “Well, if they’re going to release a cast picture…”

So here we go: here is our first look at the Alien: Covenant cast gathered in one place.

‘Lowriders’ Trailer Digs Into East LA Car Culture

Lowriders trailer

You might remember that a few years ago, Peruvian filmmaker Ricardo de Monteuil made waves with his sci-fi short film The Raven. Not long after, he signed on to direct the coming-of-age drama Lowriders, and today the first trailer for that film has arrived.

War for the Planet of the Apes‘ Gabriel Chavarria stars as Danny, a Mexican-American teenage graffiti artist growing up among the colorful lowrider car culture of East LA. His dreams put him at odds with his father (Demián Bichir), a garage owner who hopes his son will follow in his footsteps. Also starring are Theo Rossi as Danny’s troublemaker brother, Eva Longoria as their new stepmom, and Melissa Benoist and Tony Revolori as Danny’s friends. Watch the Lowriders trailer below.  Read More »

alien covenant casts demian bichir

You’ve got to give Ridley Scott credit – he is second to none when it comes to rounding up impressive actors to torment in his films. 2012’s Alien prequel Prometheus may have received mixed notices when it hit theaters, but its cast cannot be denied. Not every filmmaker can wrangle Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba and Guy Pearce and Patrick Wilson into one movie, and that’s before you get to the less famous but impressive performers, like Logan Marshall-Green and Sean Harris.

Alien: Covenant looks to continue the trend of Scott leaving strong actors to the slaughter. Demián Bichir, last seen stealing scenes from beloved movie stars in Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful Eight, has joined the cast, which means we can probably look forward to seeing his bloody death scene in 2017.

Dom Hemingway

Jude Law is a pretty, pretty man, and (like many actors) he’s enjoyed a long, healthy career in part by capitalizing on this fact. But in Dom Hemingway, he’s nothing like the handsome, elegant presence we’ve come to expect. Instead, he looks bleary and bloated and altogether slimy, and his performance looks all the more entertaining for it.

Directed by Richard Shepard, the British crime dramedy stars Law as a loud, lewd safecracker just coming off of a twelve-year stint in prison. He reunites with his BFF (Richard E. Grant) to try to get his life back on track, which means trying to collect what he’s owed from his boss (Demián Bichir) and mending his relationship with his daughter (Emilia Clarke). Check out the newest red-band trailer after the jump.

Machete Kills (9)

3D trailers are great if you’re watching them in a 3D movie theater with your 3D glasses on, but so-called 3D trailers on the Internet usually aren’t anything special. Since the effects don’t work on our computers, most “3D trailers” just turn out to be 2D trailers with action-packed scenes that we can sorta-kinda picture looking exciting in 3D.

But leave it to Robert Rodriguez‘s gleefully over-the-top Machete Kills to go over-the-top with its 3D Internet trailer. No, not even the world’s toughest ex-Federale can make your laptop suddenly support 3D technology. But he can offer a video with explosions so big, they can’t be contained by your average video player. See what we mean after the jump.
