The summer is over and the days are getting shorter and the weather is getting milder and (fingers crossed) the movies are going to start getting better. The next four months offer an embarrassment of cinematic riches, with new films from Martin Scorsese, Damien Chazelle, Tim Burton, Gareth Edwards, Paul Verhoeven, Mel Gibson, Robert Zemeckis, Park Chan-Wook, Terrence Malick, J.A. Bayona, Jeff Nichols, Ang Lee, Denis Villeneuve, Kenneth Lonergan, and other filmmakers of note waiting in the wings.

Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg have a thing for real-life drama. The pair are just coming off of Lone Survivor, an account of a Navy SEAL mission to kill a Taliban leader, and are about to dive into Patriots Day, about the events leading up to and around the Boston Marathon bombing. In between, they have Deepwater Horizon, about one of the worst manmade disasters in history.
In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded near the coast of Louisiana, springing a leak that would flow for another 87 days (making it the largest offshore oil spill in U.S. history). Of the 126 crew members on board at the time, 11 were killed and another 17 were injured. Berg’s film follows the courageous men and women who tried to prevent the disaster, and then, when the worst happened anyway, valiantly worked to save their colleagues. Less than a year after the disastrous BP Oil spill, a film based on the tragic event was already in the works. Back in 2014, director J.C. Chandor was attached to helm Deepwater Horizon. Unfortunately, the A Most Violent Year and Margin Call director walked away from the project, citing “creative differences.” Mark Wahlberg was already attached to the film at the time, and following Chandor’s departure, the actor might’ve had a hand in bringing aboard Lone Survivor director, Peter Berg, as his replacement.
Now the film is due out this fall, and today we have our first look. Below, check out a few Deepwater Horizon photos.

J.C. Chandor, who raced from Margin Call to All Is Lost to A Most Violent Year, has left the director’s chair of the upcoming film Deepwater Horizon. The reason? Our old friend “creative differences,” at least as far as the official knowledge base goes. Now, coming in to replace him, is Peter Berg, whose most recent film was Lone Survivor. The link to the new Deepwater Horizon director may be Mark Wahlberg, who is set to star in the film, and was also the lead in Lone Survivor. Read More »
