DC Pierson Announces New Novel ‘Crap Kingdom’

Derrick Comedy member DC Pierson has given us the opportunity to exclusively announce his next novel Crap Kingdom. Some of you probably know DC from Derrick Comedy’s 2009 Sundance film Mystery Team, or you might recognize him from his appearances on Community, a handful of tv commercials or his many appearances at Upright Citizens Brigade in both LA and NYC.

A couple years ago, Vintage published DC’s first novel, The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep and Never Had To, a critically acclaimed hilarious high school coming of age story with a small side of mutant creatures from another galaxy. That book is currently being developed into a feature film by Dan Eckman (director of Mystery Team and the Community episode ” Digital Exploration of Interior Design” which focused on the blanket fort war and Subway). DC and his novel were recently back in the news due to a funny incident that happened on Yahoo Answers.

DC’s new book Crap Kingdom is available for pre-order now. After the jump I have included a letter from DC explaining more about the book and how if you pre-order early, he will write and record a custom rap featuring your name. You can also see the cover art for the new book.

Derrick Comedy may not be a household name quite yet, but it’s likely you’ve stumbled across some of their work before. (At the very least, you’re probably aware of its most famous member, Donald Glover.) The comedy group met as students at NYU, and quickly gained a following for their Internet videos, including “Bro Rape” and “Blowjob Girl,” featuring a pre-Office Ellie Kemper.

Derrick Comedy then made a leap to the big screen in 2009 with Mystery Team, an underrated indie comedy about three naive high school detectives who get in over their heads. Now the film’s director, Dan Eckman, has lined up a couple of new projects that’ll reunite him with some of his Derrick Comedy teammates. Read more after the jump.

Last year Maggie Carey‘s film The Hand Job was announced, in which Aubrey Plaza would play a high school graduate who decides she needs a lot more sexual experience before college, and proceeds to work her way through a checklist of, er, action items. Yesterday many more cast members were announced and today we have even more, and roles for many of them.

Connie Britton will play the main character’s “liberal, free-spirited mother,” Mae Whitman and Alia Shawkat are two of her best friends; and Scott Porter will play a guy in a band that Plaza has a crush on.

Dominic Dierkes and D.C. Pierson (along with their Derrick Comedy co-member Don Glover) will play lifeguards; Bill Hader will be their stoned boss at the pool. Johnny Simmons is Plaza’s classmate and co-worker, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse is his sci-fi nerd best friend. There will be a few more roles cast yet, but this is a great cast so far. And after Easy A I very much welcome more efforts to turn the typical male coming of age sex comedy into a story outline that girls can get lost in, too. [Variety]

After the break, Keira Knightley heads to TV — in a way — for the Syfy miniseries Neverland. Read More »

Lauren Ambrose (Six Feet Under, Can’t Hardly Wait), DC Pierson (Mystery Team, Derrick Comedy), Cobie Smulders (How I Met Your Mother), Cedric the Entertainer and Tom Arnold (True Lies) have been cast in writer-director Stephen Gyllenhaal‘s quirky Seattle-based political comedy Grassroots. They join Jason Biggs and Joel David Moore Full details after the jump.

Comic-Con logo smallAs Comic Con approaches, we’ll be learning more and more about what we can expect at this year’s geek fest.

First up, I’ve learned that Derrick Comedy’s Mystery Team will not only have a booth on the convention floor, but will be holding a panel and a special sneak preview screening at the con. No word on the exact dates.  Writers/stars Dominic Dierkes, Donald Glover, and DC Pierson, producer Meggie McFadden, and director/editor Dan Eckman will be on hand at the panel debuting an all-new Mystery Team short film. On the convention floor:

Come bust kid criminals with Oakdale’s best eighteen-year-old kid detectives the Mystery Team in their storefront slash crime lab.  Meet the filmmakers, take pictures with actual setpieces, and submit a mystery of your own for solving.

Next up, Donnie Darko/Southland Tales director Richard Kelly says he will be making an appearance at the con to promote his upcoming sci-fi thriller The Box, starring Cameron Diaz, James Marsden and Frank Langella. The panel will take place on Friday, July 24th as part of the Warner Bros presentation. Cameron, James and Richard will be in attendance to present a first look at the trailer and “other cool stuff.”
