The UK series Broadchurch is at a strange nexus right now. The US remake of the first season, Gracepoint, is wrapping up tonight. David Tennant stars in that… just as he did in the UK original. Perfectly timed to that series conclusion is this first Broadchurch season 2 trailer, which shows that the second season takes place in the same town in which the events of season 1 went down, but there are still quite a few lingering problems and uncertainties. (Update: there are two trailers, in fact — one from the UK, and a US-specific one.)
Additionally, we’ve got the trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas Special, dubbed Last Christmas. Read More »

“I’ve had many faces, many lives,” says Matt Smith’s Doctor at the beginning of the new trailer for the Doctor Who anniversary special The Day of the Doctor, “but there’s one I’ve tried very hard to forget.” That one, this trailer suggests, is played by John Hurt, who appeared at the end of ‘Name of the Doctor,’ the final episode of the show’s most recent season.
This trailer for the show’s 50th anniversary special is huge, with a lot of effects and a scope that seems worthy of the Doctor’s birthday. In addition to Smith, we’ll see Jenna Coleman, David Tennant, Billie Piper and quite a bit of John Hurt. This is also among Smith’s final episodes in the role, as Peter Capaldi will take over as the twelfth Doctor after the 2013 Christmas Special.

It isn’t often we see an actor who appeared in one incarnation of a film or TV series starring in a high-profile remake in another country. But David Tennant is doing exactly that for Broadchurch. He starred in the UK TV series as Detective Inspector Alec Hardy, who escapes a bit of professional scandal to work in the seaside town of Broadchurch, where he’s soon part of an investigation into the murder of an eleven year-old boy.
The series, which was a tremendous success in its first season in the UK, is being remade in the US for broadcast on Fox. Tennant will play the Americanized version of the same character, with an American accent being part of what sets this version of the character apart from the original. Read More »

You’d be forgiven for suffering from pirate fatigue after this year’s lackluster fourth entry in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, but these delightful trailers for Aardman Animation’s The Pirates! Band of Misfits prove there’s still plenty of fun to be found on the high seas.
Directed by Peter Lord and Jeff Newitt, the stop motion adventure follows an eager but misguided Pirate Captain (Hugh Grant) as he competes for the Pirate of the Year Award — because, as he explains, “Every time I’ve entered, I’ve failed to win. So, I must have a really good chance this time.” Along the way, he and his similarly off-kilter crew (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, Ashley Jensen, and a fish with a hat on it) encounter all manner of strange characters including lepers, stuffy scientists, an evil queen (Imelda Staunton), and at least one monkey butler. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Can you resist the grinning appeal of a new claymation animated film from Aardman Animation? I’m not certain that I can, if the first trailer for The Pirates! Band of Misfits is any indication. The film adapts Gideon Defoe‘s book The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists — a loopy tale of high-seas misadventure and scientfic discovery — with a vocal cast that includesHugh Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen.
Here’s a new UK trailer for the film, which bears the original subtitle ‘In an Adventure With Scientists,’ and pushes the overall story structure more than the last US trailer, but keeps the levels of charm and appeal as high as the crow’s nest. Read More »
One of the weirder American monster legends is that which concerns the Jersey Devil, which originates in the 18th century, but became one of the breakout American pop-culture monsters thanks to reported sightings in the early 1900s.
Now Stephen Moyer from True Blood will star in a new film exploiting the legend: The Barrens. He’ll play a family man who, while on a camping trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrents, “becomes convinced [he and his family are] being stalked by the legendary winged monster that looks like a deformed hybrid of several different animals.” Darren Lynn Bousman wrote and will direct; the film shoots later this month in Toronto (what, not in Jersey? boo!) and will be released next fall by Anchor Bay. After the break, The Book of Mormon star Josh Gad joins Thanks For Sharing — a movie about sex addiction — and Rupert Grint and David Tennant will voice characters in the CG Postman Pat movie. Read More »
Aardman Animation doesn’t just have the CGI holiday film Arthur Christmas to release in the next year. The company also has the stop-motion The Pirates! Band of Misfits, based in part on Gideon Defoe‘s book The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists. The cast was announced not long ago, and is a thing of beauty: Hugh ‘News of the World Killer’ Grant, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen.
The trailer for the film hit today, and if you are (a) dissatisfied with the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels, (b) hungry for anything new from Aardman, (c) ready to see a weirdly appropriate use of a Ramones song in a kids’ pirate movie, or (d) all of the above, check it out after the break.
