Christopher McQuarrie‘s adaptation of Lee Child‘s thriller novel One Shot is moving forward with Tom Cruise in the lead role of hulking ex-military cop Jack Reacher, who is drawn into a strange plot involving sniper shootings in a mid-size town.
To say that fans have been unenthusiastic about that casting choice is an understatement. A recent re-read of the novel gave me a good idea of how the character will be adapted to suit Cruise, and so I’m ready to see what McQuarrie is going to offer. But I’ve had many conversations with others who aren’t so sure. Cruise seems quite aware of that uncertainty, as he talks publicly about his role in the film. Read More »

The latest addition to Christopher McQuarrie‘s One Shot, an adaptation of Lee Child‘s novel of the same name that is already set to feature Tom Cruise, Rosamund Pike, David Oyelowo, Robert Duvall, and Richard Jenkins, is Michael Raymond-James. The actor had a role on the well-liked and sadly canceled Terriers, and has been a part of True Blood as well.
Now he’ll have a chance to shine as Linsky, a criminal who works for the villain to be played by Werner Herzog, as Jack Reacher (Cruise) tries to uncover the truth behind a strange set of sniper killings in which they’re involved. That’s the basic news. Hit the break for what the announced character description suggests about the script. Read More »
I know there are people who don’t love the idea of Tom Cruise playing Lee Child‘s hulking and coldly/violently capable hero Jack Reacher. But with the addition of Werner Herzog to the cast of One Shot, the film that Christopher McQuarrie wrote and is directing based on Child’s novel, I don’t see how anyone could stay away.
Herzog will be playing a twisted old figure known only as the Zec — he’s the big bad of the film. It’s killer casting as far as I’m concerned, and something that elevates the film from ‘high curiosity’ status to ‘must-see.’ Who would have guessed that the rather resolute contrarian Herzog would end up with a major role in a studio film like this? More details are after the break. Read More »

The cast of Christopher McQuarrie‘s One Shot has been filling up at lightning speed over the past month. Robert Duvall, Alexia Fast, Richard Jenkins, and David Oyelowo have all boarded the project within the last few weeks, and now comes news that Spartacus: Blood and Sand star Jai Courtney has signed on as well. Based on the novel by Lee Child, the story follows military cop turned drifter Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) as he investigates a string of sniper shootings. Rosamund Pike is also set to star, as a detective who works with Jack to solve the case.
Courtney will be playing one of the bad guys, a highly trained sniper who tries to keep Reacher from finding out the truth. One Shot is scheduled for a February 8, 2013 release. [Cinema Blend]
After the jump, Hugh Jackman thinks that he might want to do Glee, and Highlander actor Clancy Brown gets competitive with Dennis Quaid.

The cast of Christopher McQuarrie‘s adaptation of Lee Child‘s novel One Shot is looking pretty good. Tom Cruise plays Jack Reacher, an ex-military cop who is called upon to assist the prime suspect in a series of sniper murders. Rosamund Pike plays a young defense lawyer who is also roped into the case; Richard Jenkins plays the DA trying to prosecute the sniper. David Oyelowo is a cop on the case, and Alexia Fast has a small role as a local girl with a tangential role in the story.
And now Robert Duvall has taken the call to play a small role. That role isn’t revealed, but there are two possibilities that quickly come to mind, and one of those is the villain. Read More »
I have to keep writing the phrase “Tom Cruise thriller One Shot” just to get used to the idea of the actor playing Lee Child‘s giant ex-military cop hero Jack Reacher. I vowed months ago to not bitch about that cast choice any longer, and I’ll stick to that. Getting used to it, however, takes a little work.
It will help to have great actors populating the film around Cruise, and the latest addition to the film, which revolves around a set of sniper murders in a midwest town, is the reliable Richard Jenkins. Read More »

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
I really love the action we’ve seen in the first two trailers for the George Lucas-produced, Anthony Hemingway-directed WWII film Red Tails. In both the first trailer and this new one, we see some spectacular dogfighting action. It’s the sort of stuff that any student of Lucas knows has been the filmmaker’s major preoccupation for decades. Seeing these encounters created as direct (if exaggerated) representations of World War II, rather than filtered through the lens of Star Wars, is pretty neat.
As for the rest of the footage… well, the acting looks a bit on the uninspired side, doesn’t it? I’m not sure that will even matter, because between the action and the ‘against all odds’ true story of the Tuskegee Airmen, Red Tails might have to really work overtime before it stalls out. Read More »
