Up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No, it’s probably just another rumor about Zack Snyder’s Superman. Bits of most-likely-false information about the Snyder directed, Christopher Nolan produced and David Goyer penned Man of Steel reboot have been jumping tall buildings in a single bound over the last few days and now there are so many, it’s time to do a roundup. The rumors are as follows: Anne Hathaway might be playing Lois Lane, Matthew Goode might reunite with his Watchmen director to play Clark Kent, the Superman suit will be completely computer generated and West Africa (!?!?) will play a major role in the film. And while most of these tidbits are probably untrue, the fact that they are all coming out at once does, maybe, give them a little more weight. The project is definitely progressing. We’d have thought the casting search for Zack Snyder‘s Superman had already begun, but now it is evidently on. So, actors aged 28-32 who aren’t quite discovered yet, or who maybe have a budding TV career, this is the time to source some blue tights. In other words: sorry, fans of Jon Hamm, but this is a role for another actor. A few more details are after the break. Read More »

Even though Zack Snyder still has five months to go before he releases his next movie, Sucker Punch, it seems all anyone wants to talk about is his follow up. That’s bound to happen, though, when you’ll be helming a reboot of Superman written by David Goyer and produced by Christopher Nolan. Since the announcement, Snyder has been taking the Nolan route in talking about the film, speaking in grandiose, unspecific statements. But still, when the director of one of the most anticipated films of the upcoming decade talks about it, you listen and dissect. We’ll do just that after the break and refute at least one “confirmed” fact. Read More »

Earlier today news hit that Zack Snyder is in final talks to direct the Christopher Nolan-produced David Goyer-scripted Superman movie for Warner Bros. And while everyone has an opinion on Snyder as a director on this project, I’m still wondering what is the pitch.

Briefly: Another slow-ish news day, another rumor. The rumor du jour is that, while David Goyer is interested in directing the new Superman film being assembled over at Warner Bros., the studio has someone else in mind. Reportedly, WB’s idea for the best Superman director is Chris Columbus.
The report comes from the Superman homepage, and I really hope it is fabricated, exaggerated, or in some way wrong. Columbus has his strengths, or had them as a writer. But I can’t muster up much love for either the first two Harry Potter films, and while Percy Jackson had high points, it also never turned into anything very memorable.
Columbus could turn in a movie that hits all the story points, but I don’t have faith that he could deliver one that really flies. Besides, with Christopher Nolan overseeing the movie, can you really see him giving the nod to Columbus? I can’t.
In the absence of official word to confirm or deny, what do you think about the idea of a Chris Columbus Superman?

The last time we heard about Ghost Rider 2, now being called Ghost Rider: The Spirit of Vengeance, there was a possibility that it would be moving forward without Nicolas Cage, because Sony needs to make the sequel soon or lose the rights altogether. (It could be Ghost Rider Shrugged!) Now there’s a report that Cage will likely star in the film. And there is a director nearly set. Or make that directors: Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, the men behind the two Crank films, are negotiating to make the sequel. Read More »

In the latest issue of Empire Magazine, Christopher Nolan comments on the upcoming Superman reboot that David Goyer is writing and he is producing:
“..What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think know how you approach Superman”.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”
There are two interesting things of note in this quote.

/Film reader Ian G noticed something funny in David Goyer‘s 2006 interview with the screenwriting-focused interview series The Dialogue. You may recall that we’ve featured The Dialogue Series in a previous edition of Cool Stuff (read more here). You probably also recall that David Goyer was hired to write a new Superman screenplay based on a story that Goyer dreamed up with producer Christopher Nolan. In the Dialogue Series interview clip embedded after the jump, Goyer admits that he doesn’t think he’d “ever be good to write superman.”
