Tom Hardy has never met an accent he didn’t like, whether it’s Bostonian in The Drop, Welsh in Locke, or whatever the hell he’s doing in The Dark Knight Rises. In his new movie Child 44, he gets to take midcentury Russian out for a spin.
Directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House), the thriller follows police agent Leo Demidov (Hardy) in Soviet-era Russia. When he begins investigating a serial killer who targets young boys, he attracts the wrath of the state, which refuses to acknowledge the crimes at all.
Noomi Rapace plays Leo’s wife Raisa, Gary Oldman is General Mikhail Nesterov, and Joel Kinnaman is Leo’s rival. Jason Clarke, Paddy Considine, and Vincent Cassel also star. Watch the Child 44 trailer after the jump. Read More »

Sony’s Assassin’s Creed adaptation got off to a pretty good start, snagging the white-hot Michael Fassbender to produce and star all the way back in 2012. Now it may be taking another big step forward with a new director.
Although nothing is confirmed at this point, a new report indicates that Daniel Espinosa is the top pick to take over at the helm. The Swedish director is known for his Joel Kinnaman thriller Snabba Cash (a.k.a. Easy Money) and the Denzel Washington / Ryan Reynolds actioner Safe House. More details after the jump.

Tom Hardy kept a pretty low profile in 2013, after spending the previous two years zipping from Cold War thriller to Prohibition drama to superpowered blockbuster. But fortunately for fans, his release schedule ramps up again in 2014 with two promising crime pics: the Dennis Lehane adaptation Animal Rescue, and the Stalin-era mystery Child 44.
In the latter, Hardy plays a Soviet military police officer whose investigation into a child murder attracts the displeased attention of the government. The first stills from the production have him looking sharp in uniform, alongside co-stars Noomi Rapace and Gary Oldman. Daniel Espinosa directed the film, with Ridley Scott serving as a producer. Check them out after the jump.

This week we spoke with Damon Lindelof about the sequel to Prometheus and, in the conversation, he mentioned that Ridley Scott was finishing The Counselor and had “Child 44 lined up right behind it.” That was an interesting statement, making it sound like Scott was directing the film.
Scott is not directing the film, he’s producing, but it’s a project we haven’t written about much on the site (just Page 2 mentions and one story) so we figured we’d fill you in on the details, even though it’s not exactly breaking news.
Child 44, based on a crime novel by Tom Rob Smith, will be directed by Daniel Espinosa (Safe House). The film stars Tom Hardy as a Soviet military police officer who becomes the subject of government suspision when investigating a child murder. The supporting cast is stellar too, including Noomi Rapace, Joel Kinnaman and Gary Oldman. Read More »
At one point, in 2007, the Tom Rob Smith novel Child 44, about a horrible series of child murders in Stalin’s Soviet Union based on the real story of the Ukranian serial killer nicknamed the Rostov Ripper, was going to be a Ridley Scott movie. But the project moved on from Fox to Summit/LionsGate, and while Scott will still produce the movie, Child 44 is now set to be directed by Daniel Espinosa. He made the serviceable thriller Safe House, which was released earlier this year. Will he have more luck with a tale of a real-life killer? Read More »

It’s been several months since we saw the trailer for Snabba Cash II, but now comes the trailer for the first Snabba Cash. No, we’re not getting our numbers mixed up. While the first film was a huge smash in Sweden back in 2010, it’s only now getting around to a proper U.S. release, under the title Easy Money.
The Weinstein Co. have been waiting for the right moment to release it since they picked up the picture two years ago, and now that they’re finally ready to go, they’re giving it their best push. The new trailer comes with a “Martin Scorsese Presents” stamp of approval, name-checks Dragon Tattoo author Stieg Larsson, downplays the subtitles, and helpfully points out director Daniel Espinosa and star Joel Kinnaman‘s involvement in familiar American titles Safe House and The Killing, respectively. Watch it after the jump.
