Cult of Chucky Blu-ray

(Welcome to Not Dead Yet, a feature dedicated to what’s new on Blu-ray and what special features you should be excited about. Because yes, some of us still like to own physical copies of our movies.)

It’s time for another physical media round-up! Look, I get it – you’re trying to declutter, you don’t want a bunch of Blu-ray discs all over your place. “Why buy a physical copy when I can just stream everything?” you might ask. Maybe I’m crazy, but I still think there’s something sacred about physical media. To be able to have the film you want when you want it, no hassle – unless you consider getting up and popping a disc into a player to be a hassle, in which case you’re just being lazy. It’s worth remembering that not every movie is available to stream. And even things that currently are streaming always stand the risk of expiring. That’ll never happen with your physical media.

This week on Blu-ray, there’s a sequel to the longest running horror franchise, a sequel to the lamest running Disney franchise, an existential haunted house movie and the directorial debut of Freddy Krueger. These are the new Blu-ray releases you should check out this week.

Cult of Chucky trailer

Say what you will about Chucky, the murderous doll who first appeared in the 1988 movie Child’s Play, but the cinematic killer has definitely proven to have some serious staying power. It’s been four years since the knife-wielding serial slasher, who’s been voiced by The Lord of the Rings and Deadwood actor Brad Dourif in all six Chucky movies so far, appeared in Curse of Chucky. But now he’s back in another new direct-to-video horror film from director Don Mancini, who’s helmed the three most recent entries. Watch the Cult of Chucky trailer below.

cult of chucky

In an age where seemingly every significant horror movie has been remade (or rebooted, pick your poison), there’s something to be said about the Child’s Play series continuing to pump out sequel after sequel to the original movie. You know, like proper horror franchise did back in the day. While the results have often been a little erratic, there’s something undeniably magical about a long-running series churning out movies at a fairly consistent pace over thirty years. After all, what are horror fans to do with their time if they don’t have movies to rank and compare and argue over into the wee hours of the night?

And that brings us to today’s news: Universal has officially announced the existence of Cult of Chucky, the seventh movie in the Child’s Play series the sequel to 2013’s Curse of Chucky.
