Creed 2 Director

A few months ago, Sylvester Stallone revealed on his Instagram page that he would be directing Creed 2, the follow-up to Ryan Coogler‘s acclaimed Rocky spin-off from 2015. The silence that followed was deafening and now it seems like we know why – he’s not directing it. In fact, a brand new director whose name and work you probably don’t know is stepping behind the camera.

Creed 2 Drago's son

Ryan Coogler’s outstanding 2015 film Creed was all about legacy: a son stepping out of his father’s shadow with the help of one of his old man’s best friends and most famous rival. That friend happened to be boxing legend Rocky Balboa, and since Coogler is busy with Black Panther, Rocky actor Sylvester Stallone is stepping behind the camerato direct Creed 2, which he’s been heavily teasing on Instagram over the past few months.

Stallone hinted that Dolph Lundgren‘s Ivan Drago might return to the franchise in some capacity, and we wondered if that meant Lundgren would step back into the ring or return to train a new character. Now, a UFC fighter has revealed that he’s auditioned to play Drago’s son in the film, so it seems as if the sequel will continue that thematic exploration of legacy that began in Creed.

We live in the age of legacy sequels, movies that dust off a dormant franchise and often allow the old cast to hand off the torch to a new generation. Some of these have been magnificent: Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Mad Max: Fury Road, Blade Runner 2049, and, of course, Creed, which spun the Rocky series in an enthralling new direction.

And now, two years after the first film was a box office and critical sensation, Creed 2 has found a director in Sylvester Stallone.

Ivan Drago in Creed 2

Update: This past weekend, Sylvester Stallone posted a photo on Instagram with the hashtag #drago, which is yet another piece of confirmation that a member of the Drago family will be a character in Creed 2. Read our original article from July 5 below for speculation about how this might play out in the sequel.

Ever since Creed hit theaters in the fall of 2015, surprising us all with just how outstanding a spin-off of Rocky could be, fans have been wondering when/if a sequel would come together. Though MGM CEO Gary Barber once mentioned that he would like to get a Creed sequel together for release in November of this year, that’s certainly not happening. But that doesn’t mean the prospect of a sequel is dead altogether.

Sylvester Stallone has been taking to Instagram over the past couple of weeks with some interesting nostalgic posts that seem to hint at what’s in store for Creed 2. In fact, one of them seems to flat-out confirm what kind of territory the story could be heading, and it includes a face from the past who could really make things interesting. Read More »

creed 2 director

It may have been almost entirely snubbed at the Oscar nominations, but Creed is still a miracle of a movie and one the best entires in the entire Rocky series. And while Michael B. Jordan provides fresh blood and Sylvester Stallone supplies plenty of old soul, the film really works because of director Ryan Coogler. His stylish, intimate direction is a shot of adrenaline for a 40-year old franchise, leaving the door open for, yes, a sequel. Or even an entire new series of films.

Unfortunately, some super-sized commitments may keep Coogler from committing to the next chapter of the Adonis Creed saga.

creed review

A Rocky spinoff about Apollo Creed’s son may have sounded like a terrible idea on paper, but when Creed actually opened it was an unqualified success. Audiences loved it — it’s made $105 million so far in the U.S. and counting — and critics adored it. It made a creaky old franchise feel fresh again, without undoing all the earlier installments. Heck, it even won Sylvester Stallone a Golden Globe last night.

All of which is to say a Creed sequel was only a question of when, not if, and now we have our answer. MGM is reportedly eyeing a November 2017 release date for the film, putting it about two years after Creed‘s release. That’s the good news. The bad news is what this might mean for director Ryan Coogler‘s involvement.  Read More »
