I’ve been looking forward to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy since I first heard that Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson had been tapped to direct from Peter Morgan‘s (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) script. My excitement has only increased with each new casting announcement — Gary Oldman! Colin Firth! Tom Hardy! Mark Strong! Now a first teaser has dropped for the film, and though we don’t get to see a whole lot, what we do see looks frankly fantastic. See if you agree with me after the jump.

One of my most anticipated films of the year is Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. That’s in part because it is the new film, at last, from Let the Right One In director Tomas Alfredson. And in part because the cast is about as good as they come (if quite skewed towards the male): Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Benedict Cumberbatch, Ciaran Hinds, Mark Strong, Svetlana Khodchenko, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Stephen Graham and Kathy Burke. Whew. That is a mad bastard of a cast list.

Some few years ago the Coen Brothers scripted a remake of the ’60s romantic caper comedy Gambit (originally starring Michael Caine and Shirley MacLaine) and the remake is finally shooting now under the direction of Michael Hoffman (The Last Station). Colin Firth and Cameron Diaz star in the key roles, and Stanley Tucci and Cloris Leachman have joined Alan Rickman and Tom Courtenay in the supporting cast. The first image of the leads is out now, and you can see a larger version after the break.

Briefly: I’m very happy to see that winning an Oscar hasn’t turned Colin Firth into an over-cautious deliberator when it comes to picking new roles. He’s shooting Gambit now, though granted, that hardly seems like a crapshoot, given that well-regarded director Michael Hoffman is working from a Coen Brothers screenplay.
And now he’s part of the parade of new projects looking for funding and/or distribution deals at Cannes, as he and Emily Blunt are set to be part of an as-yet untitled comedy in which both play characters who try to “reinvent themselves using other people’s identities.” Read More »
April Fools? The Weinstein Company announced today that the PG-13 version of big Oscar winner The King’s Speech will open on April 1. The film was originally rated R for a string of expletives uttered by Colin Firth as his character, King George VI, attempts to break through his stutter. Because violence is OK but a couple instances of the word ‘fuck’ aren’t, that was enough to land the film with an R.
When this cut goes out to theaters it will be on 1000 screens, replacing the R-rated version that is currently being shown. So if you want to see the original cut of the film on the big screen, you have eight more days, counting today. Deadline reports that the PG-13 cut involves replacing all the instances of ‘fuck’ with the word ‘shit.’ Otherwise, it is exactly the same as the R-rated version. April Fool’s indeed. The casting for David Cronenberg‘s adaptation of the Don DeLillo novel Cosmopolis has been an up and down affair, with original talents Colin Farrell and Marion Cotillard dropping out. Robert Pattinson is now the male lead — he plays a young billionaire who deals with quite a few problems as he spends a day crossing Manhattan in his limo. Also in the cast are Juliette Binoche and Paul Giamatti.
And now Robert Pattinson tells MTV that Samantha Morton is in the film, and that a new young actress has been chosen to play his character’s wife, but that he can’t yet reveal her name. I’m very interested to hear who that will be, but in the meantime having Samantha Morton in the cast is a great thing. She is reliably excellent, and even without knowing her specific role the fact that she is cast says good things about the movie overall.

It’s a huge testament to the talents and reputation of Park Chan-Wook that Colin Firth has reportedly chosen the director’s next film, Stoker, as a suitable way to wield his brand new Oscar muscle. Firth will star alongside fellow Oscar-winner Nicole Kidman and Alice in Wonderland herself, Mia Waskiowska, in the story of a girl and her mother who, after the death of the father, reunite with his mysterious brother. Kidman is the mother, Waskiowska is the girl and Firth would be the mysterious uncle, who is rumored to be a vampire. Hence the Bram Stoker-influenced title.

We’ve followed Gambit closely over the past year. That’s what happens when a rogue Joel and Ethan Coen script gets new life. The film is a remake of a ’60′s romantic heist movie, and looks set to be the first post-Oscar performance from Colin Firth. (His deal was done before the Oscars were handed out.) Cameron Diaz co-stars and Michael Hoffman (The Last Station) directs.
Now the film has a distributor. CBS Films will put Gambit in theaters in the US, likely in 2012. Read More »
