William Monahan, screenwriter of Kingdom of Heaven and Oscar-winning writer of The Departed, directed his first film back in 2009. London Boulevard opened quietly in the UK last year and is opening even more quietly in the States this fall.
The movie is an adaptation of a novel by Ken Bruen (who also wrote the books on which The Guard and Blitz were based) and stars Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley and Ray Winstone in a London-based gangster movie. Reviews haven’t been particularly good — hence the quiet opening — but the cast is top-notch and the material looks fun and difficult to resist despite the tepid reviews. So many set videos have surfaced from The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel it almost feels like they’re the only three movies currently in production. Obviously, that’s far from the case and another major 2012 event film has just been forced into the set video ring. That movie is Len Wiseman‘s remake of Total Recall starring Colin Farrell, Kate Beckinsale, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston and John Cho. Several photos popped online last month of robots walking around the set and now videos have surfaced that show a bunch of different hovercars on impressive rigs.

The new Fright Night, which remakes and updates Tom Holland’s enduring and entertaining 1985 film about a high school kid who finds that a vampire has moved into the house next door, is about vampires and feelings, but not vampires with feelings. That’s something that’s clear right off in conversations with the cast and crew of the film on location in New Mexico. Or, in other words, this isn’t Twilight.
We’re in the local Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, which doubles for the chain’s larger Vegas location. In the film, that’s the domain of stage magician and presumed vampire expert Peter Vincent (David Tennant). Tennant isn’t in the house, but most of the film’s major players are: Anton Yelchin, playing the hero Charley Brewster; Colin Farrell as Jerry Dandridge, the vampire next door; Imogen Poots as Charley’s new girlfriend Amy; and director Craig Gillespie, screenwriter Marti Noxon and effects guru Howard Berger. Now we’ve got the first image of Colin Farrell in the lead role of Doug Quaid, a factory worker who learns, or thinks he learns, that he is really a spy for one of two nation states, Euromerica or New Shanghai. For a movie that hinges on a murder plot, Horrible Bosses feels surprisingly lighthearted. That’s because despite the title and the marketing, the film’s draw isn’t the fucked-up wish fulfillment of giving your dirtbag superior what he deserves. Instead, its appeal lies in the easy, enjoyable chemistry of its leads — Jason Bateman, Charlie Day, and Jason Sudeikis – and the fun of watching them screw up royally, over and over, in increasingly zany ways. To put it another way, it’s Office Space meets Apatovian buddy comedy, minus the dark stuff and the sweet bits but with more consistent laughs as a result.

For a certain segment of the filmgoing population, the prime appeal of Craig Gillespie‘s new take on the 1985 Todd Holland horror/comedy Fright Night is the presence of David Tennant. He plays Peter Vincent, the stage magician with a deep interest in the occult that high school student Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) attempts to recruit in the fight against a vampire (Colin Farrell) who moves in next door.

Because the new standard for raunchy comedy advertising is based on tried and true red light district methods — show off the goods, in other words — here’s a new red-band trailer for the Jason Bateman / Charlie Day / Jason Sudeikis comedy Horrible Bosses. If you’ve missed the two previous trailers, the film features the three guys as hapless protagonists who enlist the aid of a ‘murder consultant’ (Jamie Foxx) in an attempt to do away with their three bosses, played by Kevin Spacey, Colin Farrell and Jennifer Aniston.
