It’s not always the case that “family films” actually appeal to the whole family, but two that do are Monsters, Inc. and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs. So even though we (as childless adults) may not be in their ideal target demo per se, we’ve very much looking forward to the sequels Monsters University and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. Both are due out later this year, and both have just released new posters which you can check out after the jump.

The cheeseburger rainstorms may have ceased for now, but Flint Lockwood’s battles with food are far from over. In this fall’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs sequel, Flint (Bill Hader) continues to deal with the consequences of his malfunctioning FLDSMDFR device when he discovers that it’s created a new race of food-animal hybrids — or “food-imals,” in the first of many groanworthy (but secretly hilarious… or not? Just me?) puns.
Initially, Flint and his girlfriend Sam Sparks (Anna Faris) are in awe of the lush, colorful creatures. But then, so were the characters in Jurassic Park with their dinosaurs, and we all know how that ended. Before long, the food-imals are threatening to take over entirely, and it’s up to Flint and Sam to save the town again. See the first images from the film after the jump.

Briefly: It always seemed weird that Neill Blomkamp‘s second film, Elysium, would be a March 2013 release. Granted, from what we’ve seen of the movie it looks like smarter, tougher sci-fi than most summer fare. But as the movie features Matt Damon escaping from the polluted surface of Earth to make use of medical technology on an elite space colony called, it also appears to have high entertainment value. I’d hope that a film like that could be marketed into summer success.
Evidently Sony feels the same, as the film is now scheduled for August 9, 2013. That’s a good late-summer berth for a smart sci-fi film, and roughly the same spot in which Blomkamp’s District 9 became a solid hit in 2009. So, all’s good, right? Well, part of the move is based on the fact that the Aug 9 date became vacant when MGM, Sony and Columbia realized that the Jose Padilha reboot of RoboCop is going to need more time in the oven. So that has been pushed to February 7, 2014.
Sony made a couple other small date changes, too, as Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Lefotovers will now open onSeptember 27, 2013, and the feature version of Pixels has been pushed back from a May 23, 2014 date to an unspecified time slot. [Variety]
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was a great surprise, a fun and very well-animated film that stands as one of the better kids’ films released in the last few years. (And therefore is also a good watch for adults.) While Cloudy directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are only producing the sequel Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers, they’ve handed off directorial duties to Cody Cameron (story artist on Cloudy) and Kris Pearn (head of story on the first film), who are working from a script by John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein and Erica Rivinoja.
The directorial change isn’t the only big one happening, however, as Mr. T, who voiced the intense, enthusiastic town cop Earl, will not be heard this time. The character does return, however, voiced by Terry Crews. We’ve got some more cast info and a lot of story details below. Read More »

Phil Lord and Chris Miller immediately marked themselves as filmmakers to watch with Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, a sweet family CG comedy. So naturally, for their sophomore effort, they attempted to something completely different. 21 Jump Street is rowdy and live-action, and yet it retains much of the same heart and humor that made their first go-round such a hit. It’s no wonder they keep landing such intriguingly offbeat projects — the duo are now set to helm Warner Bros.’ Lego film and something called Bob the Musical, as well as produce Cloudy 2: Revenge of the Leftovers.
During the recent press junket for 21 Jump Street, the pair sat down with /Film to discuss their upcoming projects, the difficulties of transitioning into live action, their “chickenshit” fear of moving into drama, and Lord’s nefarious strategy to make sure Miller needs him forever. Read the full transcript after the jump.
