Say what you will about Kevin Smith‘s Tusk, but ultimately it was the spark that gave new life to the filmmaker. Just like he did in the ’90s, Smith made Tusk kind of on a whim. He and his producer Scott Mosier came up with the idea, Smith wrote it and a few months later it was being shot. Unlike his ’90s debut, Smith did have funding this time so it wasn’t as down and dirty as Clerks. But the independent spirit was there. And Kevin Smith is now overflowing with movie ideas.
He’s got a few more days to shoot on Yoga Hosers, a Tusk spinoff about two 15-year-old girls fighting monsters. After that, he’ll finally make the long awaited Clerks III. He’s also got preliminary funding to make Moose Jaws, a horror comedy that is basically Jaws with a moose. That’ll likely happen after Clerks III.
For Smith fans, though, there’s one glaring omission that list: Hit Somebody. Over the past few years, Smith’s hockey epic morphed from one film, to two films, to a miniseries and then into oblivion as he got busy with so many other things. But /Film recently talked to the director and he revealed that the producers of Tusk have given him money not only to make Yoga Hosers, Clerks III and Moose Jaws but Hit Somebody as well. And they’ll shoot it in Canada during the Fall of 2015.

On the latest episode of Smodcast, writer/director Kevin Smith offered up a significant Clerks III update. One bit of news was that Smith’s podcast guest, Jeff Anderson, will return to play Randal in the film. The pair also discussed the entire trilogy. Anderson talked about his thoughts upon reading the script, Smith discussed the eventual tone of the film, and he revealed the first ten minutes will be shot in black and white. He also confirmed Jay and Silent Bob will appear much like they did in the first two films.

Like almost all Kevin Smith films, Tusk has been incredibly polarizing. I found myself in the middle of the road, seeing great promise in a film with some major problems. Some loved the audaciousness of Smith’s horrific tale, while others just hated everything about it. Smith himself is very proud of Tusk, calling it the closest thing he’s ever done to what he imagined he’d be making as a filmmaker.
The box office tended to agree with the haters. Over its opening weekend, Tusk only grossed on $1.4 million in over 600 theaters, pretty much guaranteeing a certain cult status.
The legacy of Tusk is already paying dividends, however. The project lead to a friendship between Smith and Johnny Depp, and spinning Tusk off into Yoga Hosers. Plus, in a new podcast, the director also revealed Tusk gave financiers confidence to give him money for Clerks III. Read More »
In a new interview, Kevin Smith offered updates on his upcoming projects. He’s currently in post-production on Tusk, a creepy tale based on a real-life news story, and that film has reportedly inspired a spin-off. Smith said two characters who appear in the film briefly will star in a new movie called Yoga Hosers, which is based on another story he discussed on his Smodcast.
Also, Smith said he took the script for Clerks 3 to Bob and Harvey Weinstein, but they passed on making the movie. The Weinsteins distributed the first two Clerks films but felt the proposed $6 million budget was too much. They’d distribute, though, if Smith raises the funds himself.

“Nobody but me can make a CLERKS film,” said Kevin Smith in a Reddit AMA Thursday. “But ANYONE can make a Krampus picture. So before anyone else does, I figured it’s time to keep moving forward: we’re gonna shoot COMES THE KRAMPUS in April, before CLERKS III.”
Comes the Krampus is a holiday horror anthology Smith announced a few weeks back. Different directors will each oversee segments of the film. The plan originally was to make it after Smith did Clerks III. That’s now changed, however, and Clerks III is on hold until Comes the Krampus is made. Read More »

Kevin Smith has talked about the possibility of impending retirement from feature film directing, but that isn’t how things are going down. Instead, Smith seems to be moving into his most fertile period yet. When Red State bowed in 2011 Smith said he would follow it with his final film, the hockey story Hit Somebody. That mutated into a (possible) television series, and Smith had Clerks III on his plate, before announcing the strange horror film Tusk. That was announced this past fall and shot in November, with a bit of work still to do in January.
Indeed, Smith seems to have new directorial vigor, at least when it comes to getting things written and shot. Clerks III remains on the horizon — Smith says a May 2014 shoot window is open — but now there’s another project.
Helena Handbag will be written by Smith based on a a Smodcast story by he and longtime producer Scott Mosier. What’s the tale? In Smith’s own words, “mankind teaming up with Hell to save existence from extinction at the hands of a Rapturing giant Jesus.” Read More »

Clerks made Kevin Smith, but in order to make Clerks III, Smith will have to make something else. In a new interview, the writer/director/podcaster said his next film, Tusk, will be an “ivory bridge” to Clerks III. A way to make financing the sequel easier and also to work out some of the cobwebs from not having directed a film since 2011’s Red State.
Plus, Smith revealed that Justin Long has joined the cast of Tusk, opposite Michael Parks, as the man whom Parks hires to live in his house in a walrus suit. Production begins October 21. Read the quotes below. Read More »
