Christian Bale Bails on Steve Jobs Movie

steve jobs movie

Update: Christian Bale has pulled out of Danny Boyle‘s Steve Jobs movie. THR reports “Sources say Bale, after much deliberation and conflicting feelings, came to the conclusion he was not right for the part and decided to withdraw.” Seth Rogen is in talks to play Apple co-counder Steve Wozniak, but with Bale out of the picture the film’s casting could change dramatically.

Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin has said that the lead actor in the film will be in every frame of the movie, which makes this a very demanding project for any actor. We’ll report on the new choice for the lead when that information becomes available. Boyle is reportedly in Los Angeles this week to meet with actors, so casting may be reported within days. Our original story on casting the film follows.  Read More »

Aaron Sorkin Christian Bale

We thought Christian Bale was a pretty solid choice to play Steve Jobs in Danny Boyle’s upcoming movie, but it turns out we weren’t half as excited as writer Aaron Sorkin is. Calling Bale “the best actor on the board in a certain age range,” Sorkin expressed his confidence that Bale would “crush it” as the late tech guru — in a role that is particularly difficult, and present in every single moment of the film.

Exodus Gods and Kings trailer

Let it never be said that Ridley Scott works too slowly. This winter brings the release of Exodus: Gods and Kings, his fourth film in five years. This one stars Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Ramses, and if you’ve ever been to Sunday School or caught The Ten Commandments on TV over Easter weekend, you’ll know exactly how dramatically the adopted brothers’ relationship goes awry.

Christian Bale Travis McGee

John D. MacDonald‘s long-running character Travis McGee — the star of 21 novels — is moving back towards theaters thanks to a new adaptation of MacDonald’s first McGee novel The Deep Blue Good-By.

James Mangold is directing, from a script by Dennis Lehane, tracking the early days of a “salvage consultant” who helps people out so long as he gets to keep half the value of the Haul. Now we may know what McGee will look like, as Christian Bale has reportedly agreed to star in the film. Read More »

Exodus: Gods and Kings poster

The first teaser trailer for Ridley Scott‘s new film, Exodus: Gods And Kings, has just been released. The film stars Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Pharaoh Ramses, and “tetells the biblical story of Moses, who, according to the book of Exodus, suffered near death during infancy, was adopted into the Egyptian royal family, defied the Pharoah, freed the Hebrews and parted the Red Sea.”

The film is scheduled for release December 12; you can watch the first Exodus trailer below. Read More »

Exodus: Gods and Kings poster

The new movie from Ridley Scott, Exodus: Gods and Kings, is meant (I believe) to be a serious re-telling of the story of Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt. So why do these first Exodus posters make the movie look like an awkward cross between Batman Begins and 300? Why does Joel Edgerton, in particular, look as if he should be in the header photo from one of those Gawker stories about inappropriate Halloween costumes?

Choosing Christian Bale to play Moses and Edgerton for the Egyptian Pharaoh Ramses has already inspired some discussion about casting these white dudes as figures who, in all probability, were not white. Perhaps the trailer, landing later today, will help inform that discussion somewhat. But the posters are leading the charge when it comes to establishing an identity for this movie, and they’re doing a terrible job.
