Batman Dark Knight Rises Hi Res 2

One constant topic of conversation with respect to Christopher Nolan‘s Batman films is the voice Christian Bale used for the costumed character. Is it a great way for Bruce Wayne to create a distinct and exaggerated persona for the hero, or a ridiculous affectation, or something in between? That question can be debated as much as you’d like, but now we’ve got Bale’s own explanation of the voice, which he came up with as he auditioned for the part. In fact, he created the voice as a way to deal with the mental aspect of the character, especially when he (Bale, that is) found out first-hand what it’s like to walk around in that suit.

Bale isn’t a big fan of released audition footage — “they get you at your most vulnerable moment, the bastards,” he gripes — but overall the clip below represents a good, light talk about the Nolan films and the character. It’s refreshing! Read More »

Out of the Furnace

Woody Harrelson‘s last feature role was as a time-traveling turkey in the animated family flick Free Birds, but don’t let that trick you into thinking he’s lost his edge. The new TV spot for Scott Cooper‘s Out of the Furnace has arrived, and he’s full-on terrifying in it.

The gritty drama stars Christian Bale as Russell, a steel mill worker whose Iraq vet brother Rodney (Casey Affleck) falls into the criminal underworld and eventually disappears. When the police fail to find Rodney, Russell sets out to discover the truth for himself. Check out the new video after the jump.

american_hustle_cast

David O. Russell has reunited with his Silver Linings Playbook stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper for American Hustle, which tells the story of a scam operation run by the FBI in the ’70s. The film also features actors such as Christian Bale and Amy Adams (who worked with Russell on The Fighter).

The first teaser trailer sold the fun of watching them all decked out in period garb, lying, stealing, screwing, and scamming, with Led Zeppelin scoring the action, and probably costing more than Russell’s first couple films in the process.

This new trailer gives you a lot more to chew on, with Christian Bale’s character setting the scene and then dialogue from each of the major characters to establish each, and how they’re relating to and messing up each other. By the end you’ll have some idea of what American Hustle is all about, and you’ll probably want to see a lot more. Check out the trailer below. Read More »

Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper returns this winter with Out of the Furnace, a crime thriller that features an all star cast including Christian Bale, Casey Affleck, Woody HarrelsonForest Whitaker, Willem Dafoe, Zoë Saldana and Sam Shepard.

The first trailer made the film look great, and this new one outlines the story a bit better, so if you watch this you’ll start to know how brothers played by Bale and Affleck run afoul of a local criminal played by Harrelson, and how that sets up a conflict that will probably mess everyone up in the end. American Hustle

David O. Russell‘s American Hustle features one of the most promising ensemble casts of any film this year, but the first batch of character posters splits everyone up. Christian Bale Dark Knight Rises

Christopher Nolan‘s Dark Knight Saga truly comes to a close this week with the Blu-ray release of The Dark Knight Trilogy: Ultimate Collector’s Edition. Owning all three films, in one set, packed with extras feels like the final stage on a trip we took beginning in 2005 with the release of Batman Begins. Of course, Nolan’s journey started before that, when he made the important decision to cast Christian Bale as the Caped Crusader.

A clip of an extra from the Blu-ray set is now online that shows footage from Bale’s audition tape. That’s cool enough in itself. But, because the Batman Begins suit had not been designed yet, the actor wore the Sonar Batsuit Val Kilmer wore in Batman Forever. And he acted against Amy Adams. Check that out below, along with an image of Begins co-star Cillian Murphy auditioning for the role. Read More »

The trio join an already intriguing cast that includes Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton. Hit the jump to learn whom everyone is playing.

Briefly: Ridley Scott is prepping Exodus, his film about Moses, at Fox. Christian Bale is set to play Moses, and now Scott is looking to Joel Edgerton to play Ramses (or Ramesses II). The actor is in early talks now for the role. Adam Cooper and Bill Collage scripted the film, and Steven Zaillian did a rewrite. This is one of two high-profile Moses films that have been in development in the past year. The other is Gods and Kings, which Steven Spielberg was set to make for a while. He ultimately dropped out, and the film doesn’t have a director at this point.

Edgerton, as you can see thanks to the pic above, isn’t the first guy that comes to mind for an Egyptian ruler who is contemporary to Moses. Perhaps there’s some unexpected element in the script that makes Edgerton suited for the role in a way that isn’t obvious from afar. He’s a fine actor, no argument, but this choice will kickstart arguments about whitewashed casting.

A more obviously great placement for Edgerton is in Jeff Nichols‘ new film Midnight Special, which will feature him alongside Michael ShannonDeadline announces that Kirsten Dunst has also signed on for the sci-fi tinged chase film. [THR]
