Pixels video game characters

The film Pixels stars a few humans that each enjoy a great deal of popularity. Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), Josh Gad (The Book of Mormon, Frozen), Michelle Monaghan (True Detective), and Adam Sandler (all pictured above) must band together to defeat an unusual host of alien invaders. But those three actors might not truly be the stars of the film, because the invading aliens are all veterans of classic games. Now the Pixels video game characters have been revealed.

The feature is based on the short by Patrick Jean in which a human city is besieged by game characters, but we didn’t know which ones would make the jump. Chris Columbus Gremlins Remake

 

UPDATE: We’ve heard from our good sources that the new Gremlins movie won’t be a remake, but a sequel-style reboot set 30 years after the original. Original post follows.

pixels release date

The short film Pixels, about a city attacked by classic video game characters, hit the internet in 2010. Almost immediately, a feature version of the short was put into development. That process took quite a while, but finally a cast and crew came together. Chris Columbus (Harry Potter, The Goonies, Home Alone) is directing with Adam Sandler, Michelle MonaghanKevin JamesJosh Gad, and Peter Dinklage in the cast.

After a season spent on HBO’s deathly dark True Detective, Michelle Monaghan is ready for some much lighter fare. She’s just booked the female lead in Pixels, the video game-inspired action-comedy being directed by Chris Columbus and produced by Adam Sandler. She joins a starry cast that also includes Kevin James, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage and, of course, Sandler himself.

Adam Sandler in Bedtime Stories

As a producer, Adam Sandler has a few actors that he likes to work with over and over. Chief among them is Adam Sandler, so it should come as no surprise that he’s cast himself in Happy Madison’s next big feature, the Chris Columbus-directed Pixels.

Also in the mix for the film are Sandler’s buddy and frequent co-star Kevin James, while Sandler’s Just Go With It love interest Jennifer Aniston is being courted for another role. Happy Madison and Sony were quick to snap up the rights to Patrick Jean’s short Pixels: Retro Gamers in 2010, but since then their plans for a feature adaptation have been moving pretty slowly. The film was set to open in May 2013 and then May 2014, before being pulled off the studio’s release calendar entirely.

All’s not lost, though, as the project seems about to take a big step forward. Chris Columbus is now in early talks to direct the picture, described as a Ghostbusters-style action-comedy. Hit the jump for details.
