Sundance entry The Ledge, in which Terrence Howard plays a detective who is trying to talk Charlie Hunnam out of killing himself, has always seemed like one of those movies. A known but not terribly high-powered cast; a big setup; and a story that seems to uncomfortably weave a discussion about religion into the narrative. A movie about Issues, in other words, disguised none too cleverly as a thriller. (And it isn’t Man on a Ledge; that’s a different film with Sam Worthington.) Now that there is a trailer for the IFC release, it seems even more so. Check it out after the break, but be ready to see Patrick Wilson‘s righteous religious fury stir up some trouble. Read More »

Last time we heard about the film Blackbird, it was called Kin. That was when Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde were cast as “two desperate sibling fugitives (Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde) on the run who subsequently collide with the holiday homecoming of a troubled ex-boxer (Charlie Hunnam).” The film’s name has changed, but that cast remains the same.
Now Kate Mara and Treat Williams have taken roles, playing a father and daughter who factor into the story. Sissy Spacek and Kris Kristofferson are also on board as the parents of Charlie Hunnam’s boxer. That’s a pretty cool parent pairing; in general this is shaping up with quite the strong cast. Stefan Ruzowitzky is directing from a script by Zach Dean, and the film shoots in March in Montreal. [Variety]
After the break, a shortlist for actresses that could end up in The Trade, the film about Yankee baseball players and wife-swapping that is being written by Ben and Casey Affleck. Read More »

Upon first reading about The Ledge, it felt like one of those classic Sundance Film Festival movies that could breakout and be a hit. It has a well-known cast, an experienced writer/director and a story that’s easily digestible. The story is about how and why a man on the ledge of a building is ready to kill himself, the cast includes Charlie Hunnam, Liv Tyler, Patrick Wilson and Terrence Howard and the writer/director is Matthew Chapman, who wrote Runaway Jury, Color of Night and Consenting Adults.
And while The Ledge is filled with interesting characters, solid performances and even some smart, thought-provoking dialogue, the story itself wanders around like leaf in the wind, at times totally unaware of the driving force of the movie: the Ledge of the title. Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Counterfeiters) is preparing to direct a crime thriller called KIN, and Eric Bana, Olivia Wilde (one of the few standout elements in Tron Legacy) and Charlie Hunnam are all in talks to appear. The film, written by Zach Dean, is about “two desperate sibling fugitives (Eric Bana and Olivia Wilde) on the run who subsequently collide with the holiday homecoming of a troubled ex-boxer (Hunnam).” The film is scheduled to shoot in March. Liv Tyler and Patrick Wilson will feature in The Ledge, a “suspense thriller” (as opposed to non-suspenseful thrillers) that will mark the feature debut of writer/director Matthew Chapman.
Terrence Howard and Charlie Hunnam co-star in the film about “a man (Hunnam) standing on a high-rise ledge who insists he must jump by noon as the policeman below (Howard) tries to manage the situation.” OK, sounds like Hunnam and Howard are leading the cast, so who will Wilson and Tyler play? Good question. Producer Michael Mailer has a great quote about the production, at least: “As more and more films succumb to the visual wizardry of 3D, ‘The Ledge’ explores the fourth dimension: the interior life of tortured souls hovering over the precipice of emotional nullity. This film is the reason why I became an independent filmmaker and why I continue to suffer in the trenches of independent filmmaking.” Take that, 3D! [THR]

This is almost refreshing. Just a few days ago we told you that Summit was working on an “action-heavy Dracula remake, entitled Vlad, with a script by actor Charlie Hunnam” and direction by music video director Anthony Mandler. Turns out that the project isn’t quite what anyone expected. Yes, it’s based on the life of Vlad the Impaler, and yes, it’s intended to be a big, sweeping film with a lot of action. (‘In the style of 300‘ keeps being used as a reference.)
But the film is about Vlad the man, rather than an adaptation of Dracula, and won’t touch on vampirism at all. Read More »

Summit just can’t quit those vampires. The studio is apparently working on their own action-heavy Dracula remake, entitled Vlad, with a script by actor Charlie Hunnam. After loving the guy on Undeclared, Children of Men, and Sons of Anarchy, a vampire script from Hunnam comes as a bit of a surprise. Music video director Anthony Mandler is in negotiations to direct, and Brad Pitt is producing via Plan B along with Dede Gardner. Not surprisingly, the film will apparently center on Dracula as the young prince Vlad.

Nikkie Finke has been on a roll regarding news from the world of Marvel, which makes me think she has a good inside source. Today she posted a bunch of casting tidbits for Kenneth Branagh‘s Thor. First up is Thor himself. Finke gives a list of actors who have tested for the role, including Josh Hartnett, Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy), Tom Hiddleston (The Gathering Storm), Liam Hemsworth (The Expendables), Joel Kinnaman and the previously rumored Alexandar Skarsgard.
But the big shocker is that Natalie Portman will be playing the lead female role. Possibilities after the jump.
