Here’s an example of great optimism: while the first film based on Cassandra Clare‘s The Mortal Instruments novels hasn’t even opened yet, Constantin Films is already putting together a prequel. Clare has written a related series of books called Infernal Devices, and Stephanie Sanditz has been hired to script a film based on the first one.
While the prime Mortal Instuments story follows a teen girl who learns of her half-human, half-angel heritage, and of the war between light and shadow into which she has been born, the prequel will be set in England during the Victorian Era, with a different teen female heroine, Tessa, an orphan who is in search of her missing brother. Nothing can stop the wave of YA adaptations coming to movie theaters in the next year or two — not even the relative disinterest in the movies. Beautiful Creatures and The Host didn’t really hit so far this year, but there are more to come. Earlier today we saw the trailer for the new Percy Jackson film, and now here’s the first full trailer for The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
The film features Lily Collins as a young woman who learns that there is a shadow conflict just out of sight, with half-angel warriors battling demons right before the unseeing eyes of humanity. With her own eyes open to the conflict, Collins’ character is quickly drawn in. This trailer shows far more of the newly-done effects than did the teaser, and it also makes the film look rather like a revamped Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Have a look below.

The first adaptation of one of Cassandra Clare‘s books in The Mortal Instuments cycle is going to hit screens late next summer, and the first trailer is being released just in time for the last Twilight audience to see it.
The film stars Lily Collins as Clary Fray, who learns that she is in fact a descendant of half-Angel warriors who protect humanity from darkness. She’s drawn towards one such warrior, Jace Wayland (Jamie Cambell Bower) with help from Hodge Starkweather (Jared Harris) after her mother (Lena Headey) disappears.
I. Marlene King (Pretty Little Liars) and Jessica Postigo (Tarzan 3D) scripted, and Harald Zwart (Agent Cody Banks, The Karate Kid) ended up directing. Check out the footage below. Read More »
Cool Posts From Around the Web:
After some dithering among several pretty young blond boy actors, Screen Gems and director Scott Stewart (Priest, Legion) have chosen Jamie Campbell Bower to play Jace Wayland in the adaptation of City of Bones, Cassandra Clare‘s first The Mortal Instruments novel. Alex Pettyfer was once in the running but bowed out. Jaime Campbell Bower almost certainly has to be a better choice, anyway, though I haven’t seen enough of his work to say that with certainty. (He had small parts in New Moon and Sweeney Todd, played Arthur in Camelot, and will be in Roland Emmerich’s upcoming Anonymous.)
The book starts off like so: When Clary Fray witnesses three tattoo-covered teenagers murder another teen, she is unable to prove the crime because the victim disappears right in front of her eyes, and no one else can see the killers. She learns that the teens are Shadowhunters (humans who hunt and kill demons), and Clary, a mundie (i.e., mundane human), should not be able to see them either. Shortly after this discovery, her mother, Jocelyn, an erstwhile Shadowhunter, is kidnapped.
Lily Collins, playing Clary, might be the determining factor with respect to the shoot schedule, as she is also set to be the lead in Tarsem’s Snow White film. That one has to shoot very soon, since it is set for a March 2012 release. So The Mortal Instruments will likely shoot later this summer or in early fall. [Deadline]
