Far Bright Star

Back in the late 2000s, Joaquin Phoenix was stirring up some headlines and sparking conversations for his weird behavior and sudden desire to become a rapper. But it turns out that was all for show, as part of a faux documentary directed by Casey Affleck called I’m Still Here, an examination of celebrity that was essentially a somewhat more dramatic version of Borat.

Now Affleck will direct Phoenix again, but this time in a full-fledged narrative film. They’re teaming up for a period western called Far Bright Star, an adaptation of Robert Olmstead‘s 2009 novel of the same name. Read More »

Triple 9 trailer

A great cast doesn’t guarantee a great movie (just look at Black Mass), but it certainly never hurts. And John Hillcoat‘s Triple 9 has got a fantastic one. Director John Hillcoat has yet to make a major box-office hit. The director behind LawlessThe Road, and the incredible 2005 western, The Proposition, makes bleak and brutal movies about the violent side of humanity. The Finest Hours

Chris Pine is currently off reprising his role as Captain Kirk for Star Trek Beyond, but later this year we’ll see him playing a very different kind of captain in The Finest Hours. HBO loves itself a good historical miniseries, and the next one to come from the network will be Lewis and Clark. The frontier drama has a star-studded lineup both in front of and behind the camera: Tom Hanks, Brad Pitt, and Edward Norton are executive producers, and Casey Affleck and Matthias Schoenaerts will star.

Daniel Espinosa on Safe House set

Boston Strong has found a director and lost a star. First, the positive news: Safe House director Daniel Espinosa has entered talks to helm the 20th Century Fox drama, which follows the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.

Interstellar images

There are only about three months left in 2014 at this point, but those three months look to be absolutely jam-packed with exciting new movies. One we’re particularly looking forward to is Christopher Nolan‘s Interstellar, which shoots Matthew McConaughey into outer space in a last, desperate attempt to save humanity.

Jack Reynor in Transformers: Age of Extinction

A Transformers star is set to play a transformative athlete. Jack Reynor, who is on screen this weekend in Transformers: Age of Extinction, is likely to play Major League Baseball superstar Josh Hamilton in a biopic of the slugger, written and directed by Casey Affleck.
