‘Rio 2′ Teaser Trailer

rio2

The teaser trailer for Rio 2 follows a well-established pattern: throw away the story, and just give the audience some cute, dancing animals. That works for quite a few family films, but in Rio’s case it is more appropriate than most. This is the sequel to a musical about colorful birds that was heavily influenced by the culture of Brazil, after all. So this teaser gets the idea of the sequel across pretty well: it’s Rio, again. ‘Rio’ Character Posters

If a film studio can’t bring in audiences to a slick-looking, 3D animated film starring animals with famous voices, they might as well hand over their keys. Making kids movies is like printing money; even the bad ones are usually successful in some way. That makes it tough to gauge just how big a role the marketing played in it.

For example, on April 15 Blue Sky is releasing Rio directed by Carlos Saldanha, who has done Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: Meltdown, and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs for the CG animation house. It features characters voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Foxx, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Mann, Jemaine Clement, George Lopez, Jake T. Austin, Will.I.Am and is about a rare bird (Eisenberg) who finds out there’s one other bird in the world like him, and she’s female (Hathaway), so he travels to Rio de Janeiro to win her heart.

While the main characters are important, side characters regularly make these movies and that’s what these new character posters focus on. The question remains, will posters like this make much of a difference? Check them out and let us know. Read More »

Movie Trailer #2: Rio

In May, 20th Century Fox released the first teaser trailer for Blue Sky Studios’ computer animated film Rio. The teaser showed promise, introducing us to a few cute little bird creatures, but it gave us little idea about the larger journey of the film. Now Fox has released a new movie trailer for the film, which shows us a lot more about the film’s plot.

Directed by Carlos Saldanha (Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: Meltdown, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs), and starring Anne Hathaway, Neil Patrick Harris, Rodrigo Santoro, George Lopez and Jake T. Austin, the story follows “a nerdy macaw who leaves the comforts of his cage in small town Minnesota and heads to Rio de Janeiro. He embarks on the adventure of a lifetime, learning to open himself up to all that life has to offer along the way.”

I love the design of the birds (the human character not so much), and you can definitely tell this trailer was edited to appeal to the 3D audiences seeing Shrek Forever After. Blue Sku Studios has always been good at creating cute little creatures, but they have suffered finding good stories. The most interesting character in the Ice Age sequels was the cute squirrel Scrat, who would always relegated to the sidelines. That said, I really liked Horton Hears a Who.
