Asa Butterfield plays a Martian in The Space Between Us, but not the kind with slimy green skin and giant jet-black eyes. He’s a human, just one that happens to have been born on Mars. His mother was an astronaut, you see, and didn’t realize she was even pregnant until after she’d already set out as part of a mission to colonize the red planet. So Gardner becomes the first baby born there, and grows up in a tiny settlement consisting of just 15 people.

Gardner does have one lifeline to Earth, though — an online friend named Tulsa (Britt Robertson), who lives in Colorado. He sets out to visit her on Earth, and enlists her in a quest to learn more about where he came from. It’s part The Martian and part John Green, and if you’re in the mood for an earnest coming-of-age romance with a bit of sci-fi flair, it just might hit the spot.

Cameron Crowe’s ‘Roadies’ Cancelled at Showtime

Roadies cancelled

Roadies has reached the end of its road. Showtime has officially cancelled the Cameron Crowe-created dramedy, which starred Luke Wilson and Carla Gugino as crew members for a touring band. In an official statement, Crowe thanked Showtime and executive producer J.J. Abrams for the “life-changing experience” of making the show.  Read More »

Roadies Trailer

If you love Almost Famous, then this summer you may want to get Showtime for a couple months. Director Cameron Crowe is bringing a new series to the cable network called Roadies, following the behind the scenes work done by the various crew members who help ensure that the rock concerts you love to attend go off without a hitch. They’re like one big weird family, and you get to follow them around while they’re on the road through all their ups and downs.

Episode 101 (Pilot)

Cameron Crowe‘s track record has been hit or miss as of late. Elizabethtown drew limp reviews and even limper box office totals; We Bought a Zoo fared a bit better but quickly faded from memory; and Aloha was famous mostly for its bizarre casting of Emma Stone as a part-Asian character. But we’re in his corner here at /Film (it’s practically a running joke how many of us consider Almost Famous among our favorite films of all time), so we’ve got high hopes for his foray into television with Roadies.

As the title suggests, the new Showtime drama centers on a group of backstage workers following a hit arena band on a 60-show, 43-city tour. The premise seems just about perfect for Crowe, whose passion for music is outweighed only by his identification with “the uncool” — the earnest and vulnerable and romantic outsiders surrounding the cool guys on stage. Luke WilsonCarla GuginoImogen PootsRafe Spall, and Keisha Castle-Hughes are among the main cast. Watch the latest Roadies teaser trailer after the jump. wayward pines pic

In season two of Wayward Pines, another man (Jason Patric) finds himself just wanting to go back home. The set up is quite similar to season one’s, but the current situation in the small town and the new cast should add some distinction to the upcoming season of Wayward Pines. Executive produced by M. Night Shyamalan (The Visit), the thriller returns this month to Fox.

Roadies Trailer

It’s no secret that pretty much the entire /Film crew has undying love for Almost Famous. Maybe it’s because of the similarities between covering the world of music and covering the world of film and television, or maybe it’s just because it’s a damn good coming-of-age tale. No matter what the reason, I love it. Therefore, I’m happy to see director Cameron Crowe‘s first television endeavor taking him back behind the scenes of rock and roll with a new Showtime series called Roadies.

Not unlike Almost Famous, the show follows around a fictional band, but it’s the crew who gets the concerts ready that takes the spotlight. They tour around the United States, creating an unconventional family-like bond with all the good and bad that comes with living each other on the road for months at a time. Get a taste of what you can expect with the first Roadies trailer below. Read More »

Wayward Pines season two

Is anyone out there watching M. Night Shyamalan and Chad Hodge‘s TV series Wayward Pines on Fox? The series debuted about two years after it was picked up by the network, and while it didn’t do so well when it premiered up against the season finales of The Blacklist and Scandal, it’s actually found a decent audience since then.

But while the live numbers weren’t anything to write home about, Wayward Pines gained a record percentage DVR lift of 90% for a 1.9 rating, which isn’t bad at all. In the weeks since, it’s actually gained a consistent viewership (especially after DVR numbers come in), but that could get shaken up if the show may get a second season with a whole new cast.

New ‘San Andreas’ Images Put the Rock in Peril

San Andreas Dwayne Johnson

Californians have been waiting decades for the Big One, the massive earthquake expected to rock the San Andreas fault at a magnitude of 7.0 or greater on the Richter scale. As of now, there’s no telling when the event might hit — at least in real life. In the movies, we already know there’s a catastrophe due to land next summer.

Dwayne Johnson leads Brad Peyton‘s San Andreas as Ray, a helicopter rescue pilot who’s in the air when the Big One arrives. He tries to track down his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) along with his ex-wife Emma (Carla Gugino), as destruction rains down around them. See the new San Andreas images after the jump.
