Californians have been waiting decades for the Big One, the massive earthquake expected to rock the San Andreas fault at a magnitude of 7.0 or greater on the Richter scale. As of now, there’s no telling when the event might hit — at least in real life. In the movies, we already know there’s a catastrophe due to land next summer.
Dwayne Johnson leads Brad Peyton‘s San Andreas as Ray, a helicopter rescue pilot who’s in the air when the Big One arrives. He tries to track down his daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) along with his ex-wife Emma (Carla Gugino), as destruction rains down around them. See the new San Andreas images after the jump. Everyone remembers Patrick Stewart had one very big movie out this year, but he also had a much smaller one making the festival rounds. Directed by Stephen Belber, Match stars Stewart as a Juilliard ballet instructor forced to reflect upon his life when he’s interviewed by a married couple (Carla Gugino and Matthew Lillard) with ulterior motives. Watch the Match trailer after the jump.

Okay, so as I said yesterday, we usually try to focus on entertainment news and avoid celebrity stories, but the Star Wars Episode 7 cast and crew taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge felt entertainment news-worthy enough to feature on the site. I honestly thought that was the last of those videos we’d feature on /Film but now the comic book superheroes are taking the challenge in full costume: Henry Cavill and Amy Adams both took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on the set of Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in their film costumes. I’m going to call it the Superman Ice Bucket Challenge.
Thats right, Cavill is wearing his complete Man of Steel Superman suit and Adams is dressed as reporter Lois Lane. We absolutely needed to share this video in case you missed it. And one Ice Bucket Challenge is nothing for Superman, so they give our favorite alien superhero something extra. Watch the Superman ice bucket challenge video embedded after the jump now.

Maybe it was David Mamet‘s script. Maybe it was Jason Reitman‘s casting. Most likely it was a combination of both, but the latest live read at Los Angeles County Museum of Art was the stuff of legend. Six women – Mae Whitman, Carla Gugino, Robin Wright, Catherine O’Hara, Melanie Lynskey and Maria Bello – reading the screenplay for Glengarry Glen Ross was the perfect mix of material, personality, chemistry, and energy. Add a certain je ne sais quoi, and the great script and event concept became something truly special.
Presented as part of the Film Independent at LACMA Film Series, the Glengarry Glen Ross live read was, unfortunately, a one-time-only event. But below, I’ll do my best to explain how each actress expertly inhabited their character, simply sitting on a stage with a script and a music stand. Read More »
20th Century Fox has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of the Newbery-winning children’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday, Ghost of Girlfriends Past), the the comedy stars Jim Carrey as a businessman whose “professional side starts to unravel after he inherits six penguins, and as he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland.” The movie co-stars Carla Gugino, Ophelia Lovibond, Philip Baker Hall, Andrew Stewart-Jones, James Tupper, Clark Gregg, David Krumholtz and Angela Lansbury.
For me, Jim Carrey movies are begining to become a subgenre of wacky family comedies, and all of them feel the same. Mr. Popper’s Penguins seems no different. And yes, the trailer even includes a catchy pop song from pop culture past. Seems like the fulfilled the formula to the T. That said, I’ll probably still see the movie, if not in the theaters then on video, just for the penguins alone (even if they are partly CG). Hit the jump to watch the teaser trailer. Please leave your thoughts in the comments below.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
How does Sebastian Gutierrez keep getting these actors to appear in his films? So far just about all of his work has been laden with impressively star-studded casts, but nothing he’s produced has even come close to finding any sort of success at the box office — or with critics, for that matter. I guess that’s of no consequence for his next effort though, since the film is being released exclusively on the Internet. For free.
That film is Girl Walks Into a Bar, and it brings together an ensemble cast including Carla Gugino, Zachary Quinto, Josh Hartnett, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Robert Forster, Alexis Bledel and many more. That roster of actors is incentive enough to check out the film. That you won’t have to pay to do so is the cherry on top. Learn more about the film and check out the trailer after the break. The sex comedy Elektra Luxx premiered almost a year ago at South by Southwest but, until now, we weren’t sure when we’d get to see it. Directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, who wrote Snakes on a Plane, it stars Carla Gugino as a pregnant ex-porn star turned sex education teacher who gets pushed back into things when an old friend, played by Marley Shelton, approaches her with a proposition. The film made Peter’s list of Best Movies of 2010 You’ve Never Heard of and now, we have a release date and full trailer for the film. Elextra Luxx, which also stars Timothy Olyphant, Adrianne Palicki, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Malin Akerman, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and others will be released March 11. Check out the trailer and official plot description after the jump. Read More »
I Melt With You stars Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Rob Lowe and Christian McKay as four best friends who meet up for a reunion to drink, do drugs and take a vacation from their daily lives. Carla Gugino and Sasha Grey are featured, it has opening credits akin to Gaspar Noe’s Enter the Void, an incredible (but possibly temporary) punk rock soundtrack and an awesome beach house setting. Sounds great, right? Unfortunately, as directed by Mark Pellington, I Melt With You is a over-indulgent, bloated, valueless film that’s among the worst I’ve seen so far at the Sundance Film Festival.
